discovered maggots in the bin at 12.30 (midnight). any suggestions what to do with the rubbish in the bin (all wrapped i may add) whilst we deal with the flaming things. the ones that had vacated the bin and were weaving their way across the slabs have all been burnt! but the bin men dont come until wednesday!!!!

We used boiling water a couple of years ago. But the birds got a feast with the ones that got away!

my neighbour sprayed hers last week with fly spay

A good spraying of fly spray then shut the lid. Worked for us the other week ;0)

Any spray insecticide will work, whether it's a house one like fly spray or (even better) a garden one that's designed for caterpillars. That will halt them in their tracks till Wednesday, then you can wash out the bin with boiling water and Dettol and then spray down with more insecticide.

We use Jeyes bin spray it kills when you spray and carries on killing for sometime after also deodorises the bin

We had them the other week. We used loads of salt, and then emptying the cats litter tray out that totally nailed them! It was my brothers fault to begin with by putting a dead pigeon in there unbagged, yuk!

thanks will try those treatments, used household flour to suffocate them as i had read that as well, worked for my neighbour! damn things!!

I came back from a week-long camping trip to find maggots in the bin inside the house, as I had left the lid slightly ajar before I left, and a blooming fly must have got in to feast on its content.

I did not manage to get rid of them all as some went under the fridge freezer, and had to put up with blooming flies for at least a week!

Nowadays, emptying the pet food bowls and bin are on my list of "To Do's" before a trip.

we had them the other week and we emptied the bin and rebagged rubbish and used Jeyes to clean bin out only to let dogs out at about 3am to find what seemed like millions on our path so I used copious amounts of boiling water and bleach to kill em, was at it for over an hour, also had a tub of boiling water to tip them into once I'd swept them up (was still having daily visits from district nurse so wanted them gone)
