the new garmin live 1695 we purchased in february 2013 has a broken cradle meaning that if you try and connect the suction cup it'll fall straight back out.
contacting garmin, their recommendation was (as they don't have any spares) is to go and buy my own!
is this really fair for an item that is under warranty?

How long is the warranty?
If it is more than 12 months, you registered the item with Garmin, and you still have the receipt then it is the problem of the original seller, and not the manufacturer. Take it up with them.

Funnily enough, the cup on our (older) model has just done the same, but I think I'll just stick it on to the ball.

it's only 6 months old and registered the same day i received it, so even with a 1 year warranty i would have thought Garmin should have replaced it. but their problem is that they don't have any spares for this model and they are expecting me to buy one online from somewhere

yep thats the one, they have told me to go and buy one and haven't said they will pay me back.
the plastic parts that the ball pushes into was in little bits - no idea how as it hardly gets used.....

Where did you buy it from? The power lead on my Garmin kept blowing fuses at less than a year old. Took it back to Halfords who gave me a new lead, no questions asked.

it was a "groupon" purchase and it has to be registered with the manufacturer. i'm a bit miffed to be honest, i'll probably think of a way to make it good, but i'd really like a replacement

As said, the item is still under guarentee so get on to the original supplier. the fact that it was "groupon", who I've never heard of, doesn't affect your rights under the SoG Act. It is nothing to do with Garmin!

Graham, Groupon are one of the "voucher/deals" type sites, concentrating on offers in the buyer's own area. It's an odd one, as you are purchasing a voucher (a "Groupon") for the underlying product or service, which is fulfilled by a third party.

If it was me I'd probably just buy another cradle from the Amazon link above. If that broke there'd be a clear remedy.

The point being made earlier is that the resolution lies not with Garmin, but with the retailer. It's debatable whether that is Groupon, given the nature of their business.

To me, life's too short. To continue to use a £150-200 device in the way you want, buy a new holder from Amazon. Job done, and an easy solution if it breaks too. Ours was bought two years ago, and the cradle is fine.

Sorry, but it is pointless being "miffed" since you are trying to persue the wrong people in getting the part replaced. Garmin are quite correct, in that it is legally nothing to do with them, and you should be taking this up with your supplier "Groupon". You have been provided with a link above, so why don't you follow that?

The Sale Of Goods Act is quite specific; if there is a problem with an item then the RETAILER is responsible, and not the manufacturer.

And to be honest, this situation shows exactly why these "cheap" deals are really not always a good idea. At least Amazon have an excellent returns/faults system.

Very annoying, but rather than buy a cradle why not get one of these 7" Sat Nav`s or a truck 7" Sat Nav, which is handy if your towing a caravan so you can set dimensions to avoid dodgy routes.

Free map updates for life and good Sat Nav. We have had the car 7" Sat Nav for nearly 2 years and have just updated to the 2013 maps. Used for various trips in the UK and Belgium, France and Spain and never let us down.

Just a thought.

Sadly Garmin who in the UK between 2000 & 2012, had a unsurpassed reputation, for 1,000% customer service. Swapping out, out of warranty or damaged models, for reconditioned units for free, instead of charging their standard fee of £80, even transferring data over.

Has utterly gone to the wind now, and the reputation of their customer customer services, drops further down, on a daily basis

So whilst their attitude, would have shocked me, just 2 years ago, today it does not, and that is sad.
