Has anyone any experience of having tonsils removed as an adult. My daughter who is in her 30's has repeated episodes of tonsilitus and I wondered if removal would help.

Had mine done at 23 after years of tonsilitis, every 4-6 weeks. The doctor said it would be the worst sore throat i ever has but compared to the tonsilitis, where i could hardly get fluid down, it was a breeze.
I ate a crusty ham roll on the night for my tea as the hospital food was disgusting and i was home the next morning.
Best thing i ever did!!

My aunt told me she had them removed as an adult in Singapore without general anaesthetic just after the war. The surgeon told her that infected tonsils were a very serious condition due to the humid climate out there and she could die if they were left in.

My son had them out as an adult and he came home for a week or so to be pampered and coddled.

My husband had his out as an adult several years ago now. He'd had repeated infections since childhood and they had always been enlarged, he also snored really badly and was about to be investigated for sleep apnoea when he was offered surgery in his late twenties.

He was in a lot of pain afterwards and ended up with an infection, but once that was all cleared he healed well. he's never had any problems since and it more or less cured his snoring, his quality of sleep is much better and there was no need for the sleep apnoea investigations.

I had mine out about 12 years ago (would have been about 28). Looking back I had a few bouts of mild sore throats throughout childhood and as a young adult, but in my late 20's I started suffering from repeated bad infections. It got to the stage where they where happening every few weeks. I insisted my GP refer me to have them removed as I was getting so ill that I was constantly taking time off work.

It was painful afterwards, but I was out of hospital after a couple of days. I rarely get sore throats now and I'm so glad I had them removed.

Thank you all for your response,I will pass them on and when this latest bou
t is over she could speak to her Doctor. She is breastfeeding at present and he said she shouldn't take antibiotics.

Apart from paracetamol anyone got any suggestions for pain relief?

There are antibiotics that are suitable for use when breast feeding, but as most sore throats are viral, they may not be appropriate. Gargling with soluble aspirin is effective as is gargling with salty water if she can stand it! Plenty of warm drinks, lots of them. Nothing to eat or drink that's either very hot or cold. Don't know how old baby is, but she is probably a bit run down.

I had mine out at 14, but I was big for my age, so adult-size!

It was sore for a while, but no worse than an attack of tonsillitis. At least you don't get the fever and all of that with the op.

It was my first anaesthetic, and I was sick as a dog afterwards (as I always am. Because they'd bled, I brought up loads of blood, which scared me at the time but I was fine.

I still get bad throats, but nothing like as bad as tonsillitis.

My OH had one of his tonsils out just recently, and he's 68 years old. He was out of the hospital the next day, had a sore throat for a week afterwards, but he said that was nothing compared to the pain before he had it removed!

He had been taken to hospital in an ambulance and operated immidiately after - in the evening he started having a sore throat, and in the morning, when he had to phone the ambulance, he already had a beginning sepsis. He has no health problems at all, so it was quite scary to realize how fast a simple tonsillitis can develop into something lifethreatening, so if I had tonsillitis often I certainly would have my tonsils removed!

I had mine out when I was 28/29 ... so that's 20 years ago now! I'd suffered from tonsillitis for years and had begun to have repeated bouts every 4-6 weeks following a quinsy (abscess) when I was a student in the south of France. It was painful after the operation but well worth it as I can honestly say I've never looked back. The amount of anti-biotics I was taking was getting ridiculous and I've barely had to take any since :-)
