Hi, I have posted this in 'days out' forum and have no replies so thought I'd try here. We plan to buy a gps and are not sure which best suits our purpose, garmin or memory map. We walk a fair amount and most holidays are planned around walking. We use either local guide books or routes from Country Walking magazine, backed up with OS maps. We don't tend to devise our own routes at present but this is something we would like to be able to do (lacking in confidence for this). We are often lost so thought it would be good idea to use gps. I know map and compass is golden standard for navigation but are buying gps for back up and claification of location. Wondering if any one uses these and can help.
A decent quality GPS with colour screen for maps cost almost as much as a reasonable smart phone, that's what I would do (plus a backup paper map and compass if walking in a remote area). With smartphones now the GPS chips are pretty much just a good (oftent the same) plus you have the option of many other great apps for Walking, Biking, Geocaching...
If you already have a smart phone, happy days. Memory Map and many other apps are available. I used to use to use Memory Map on my laptop and ancient smartphone (before the iPhone and android came out and the app market exploded). Now I use View Ranger for OS maps and a few other free apps too.
If you do go down the smart phone route, also invest in an extra battery or too.
Thanks for the reply. We are buying this between my sister, my husband, myself and my son for joint birthday present and will be sharing it and using it separately at times. I am a bit of a ludite when it comes to phones and have a basic phone which I use for calls and texts and costs me around six pounds a month so I am not keen to update to smart phone. My sister has similar but son and husband have all singing all dancing phones. They can use these for gps but are indulging my sister and I because it's our birthday present.. Will look into it though because hadn't thought of going down that route. Thanks
Don't know about battery life on GPS units, but memory map kills my tablet and phone, I use mine mainly in my vehicle, but would be lucky to get a reliable 6 hours from the phone, less on the tablet (around 3-4 hours)
I don't think I would want memory map as a replacement to a paper one yet.

Yes, but if they plan to walk for more than 6 hours, they could take extra batteries. I'm not suggestion dumping the paper maps though.
not always an option, alot of tablets, and more and more smart phones have integrated batteries, neither rof mine have replaceable batteries (well you can, but it involves tools)
I do a lot of Geocaching which involves walking along footpaths/bridleway and using os maps. I have a Garmin Dakota 20 with built in maps. It's great to be able to see just how far you've walked. I brought it from a sports shop a couple of years ago but places like Go Outdoor normally have good deals or even the Ordnance survey website.
