A few weeks ago i was driving my partners car (as a named driver) and, whilst pulling out of the petrol station, i hit a small van...
I said i would prefer to not go through insurance as i didnt want to affect any premuims or no claims so the other driver agreed to get a quote and let me know...
i received a letter yesterday from him stating the quote, backed up with a letter from the garage... however, i cannot afford to pay the sum outright as he rightly wants so my question is.... is it too late to go through the insurance company? ive not had any experience of this before so am a little worried about how to go about this, any advice very welcome and much appreciated please x

no, not too late, just tell him you decided to go through your insurer, he then tells his insurer, you tell your and get it sorted.

explain that the quote was a bit dearer than you can afford and you will inform the insurance, but be prepared for your insurance to rise next time its due.

Has he only provided you with the one quote? He should really get three different ones and provide you with all of them before you make up your mind.

He dosen't have to get any quotes. He could just put it the hands of his insurance company and let them sort it out, hes actually doing the OP a favour.

I assume the OP has checked the 3rd Party he hit has insurance?

Agree with the above, he can choose where its going, but a valid point about checking he has insurance too it may be a good bargaining tool, if you got his number plate check it at askmid.

I am sure that you are legally bound to notify the insurance company of any incident whether you claim or not.

it depends, once you notify your insurance even if you don't claim it stays on your file, I once was backing up into a parking space and a woman in a landrover was leaving a drive and didn't see me I only scratched her number plate but she wanted a new bumper, I left it in the hands of the insurance.

My niece was in a similar situation a few weeks ago and she didn't go through the insurance although I told her she should have. The third party initially wanted £1200 which was refused then ridiculously went down to £500 and so a week later it went down to £200. I told her not to pay and it turned out the guy wasn't insured for business and only had a policy for social and domestic pleasure. She didn't pay out at the end of the day but the insurance company give her a hell of ticking off for not reporting it the same day. So the advice is to report it NOW! because there are scammers out there willing to take your cash whichever way they can to avoid the legal root and once parted with your money you are basically aiding and abetting the thief.

inform the insurance company, car repairs are often so stupidly priced its cheaper to take the hit on your insurance, does the quote tie up roughly with the damage caused?

I would go through your insurance too.

Plus, even if you don't claim, you still have to report the incident. It will go on your file - you can't do anything about that. However if you don't declare it, your insurance company could say that it invalidates your policy and refuse to pay out in future.
