It never ceases to amaze me how difficult towns and cities can be to navigate. Signage seems to be designed solely for people who are familiar with the area already, and are prepared in advance for which lane they need to be in, for example. Signs are often painted in the road, where they can't be seen if the traffic is heavy, or the road is wet, or it's dark, and how are you meant to work out instantaneously whether you want say the A123 to W'ton or the A234 to O'fd whilst still trying to read the speed limits, no entries, bus lanes, obey traffic lights ,pedestrian crossings and yellow boxes!!

I couldn't agree with you more! Locals do not need local directional signs; strangers do. And why oh why, when they put in diversions because of roadworks or emergencies can't they continue the diversion signs? Major road in M'cer a couple of decades ago with clear signposts and got diverted. Diversion signs disappeared and I got totally lost in a less than salubrious district.

Even doing one's research in advance doesn't help in those circumstances or, as seems to be the case with the OP, there are local trials. If it's a trial, then a simple written warning could be issued, rather than a fine.

Hope OPs wife okay.

Recently i was in Birmingham and as well as looking at the various speed limits. One  time in a 30mph and next in a 40mph. On top of that you had to watch for bus lanes and also a lane for use with cars with two or more in.

I have noticed, there is more and more sign over load. Signes are easily missed, it's impossible to look at all signes at once. I hate it when directions are on the road. Unfortunately, X_ray vision is not on my skills list.

Our local News featured this tonight. They stopped some drivers and asked why they were on the bridge.

2 said they were 'following satnav'.   One even said she saw the restricted access markings!

From the footage there are plenty of signs. If any driver feels they are overwhelmed by all the signs they should get some training, or decide driving isn't for them.

Living in London you get used to cameras being present on bus lanes, junctions and even monitoring parking. Bus lanes can be tricky as they may have various time restrictions. If I'm unsure or can't see a time operation I won't run the risk as the fine is £130.

They now have them in Brighton to catch people who stray into the special bit reserved for cyclists at traffic lights. A guy at work got an FPN for waiting in the cyclists only area on his motorbike!

He's thinking of sending in photo of the road markings and a pic of his bike, and inviting them to count the
number of wheels in each image and see if they match.

I think there are so many pitfalls for motorists in town centres these days that it's a miracle anyone can go a day without getting a ticket of some sort.

I agree with that. I bet there's been a fair few accidents caused because drivers are looking at signs and not at the road. It's one of the reasons why I rarely use a satnav in a town centre, it's another distraction.

Emergency vehicles have a 'constant' blue showing when on blues and twos which shows up on any activated cameras etc. though even on blues and twos they still have to follow all the rules of the roads so red lights and speed are 'on caution'

Sorry but this is ridiculous, if you can't drive and read roads signs etc then how the hell did you pass your test?
If you're that bad a driver then stay off the road or take your fines like a man/woman.

Daner, you have misunderstood the post and got hold of the wrong end the stick, I'n afraid.

You are quite right people should know how to read signs, but
I am not talking about that

There are at times too many signs which at times can contradict each other. This has been
highlighted in the past by.    Rac and AA.    Also this has caused accidents.
Fran understood.

Heath63, I have seen some of the comments on the RAC forum and some of them are ridiculously overloaded with signs. I find some signs placed on the road quite helpful provided you're well back and someone doesn't jump in ahead of you (!), but absolutely useless if there's a long queue ahead of you at the lights and you've got a bus in the bus lane on your left obscuring the signs! I also tend to keep out of bus lanes now because times may not be clear - to think I spent five years driving around London's West End and the City, doesn't bear thinking about now.

I agree ficklejade with you about signs on the road, they are helpful.
Someone mentioned that when there are cars, they are covered, then they can't be Seen, which I agreed with.
I never enter a bus lane at all. I like to play save.
Regard about RAC it was a spokesman on news talking about too many signs in some areas, causes confusion. It was really good.

OPus problem seem to catch most people out.

Wasn't so much the Op I was referring to as some of the comments afterwards.

Whose comments Daner, there has been quite a few of us saying the same thing. Are we all wrong. Or are you just targeting my comments. Even others have said the same. If so thats bullying.
