Does anyone know much about setting up a website? We're looking into buying a camper to do up ourselves and I'd quite like to blog about it, for our own records as much as anything else, but I don't know much about this kind of thing.
I've heard of wordpress but don't know how easy it is to use. I also googled and found 1&1 that does it all for you. I'm not sure if it's a case of you get what you pay for.
Any recommendations for someone who's a bit clueless?
Cheers.
1. You register the domain name ie www.mywebsite.xx.uk
2. You pay someone to host it.
3. If you have the equipment and a fixed outward facing IP address you can host it yourself.
1&1 are one of number of companies who will register the domain and host it for you. They will give you online tools so you can design your own website and in return will charge you usually monthly for the privelage. I notice the personal website is £6.99 per month ex vat.
Other companies offer the same sort of thing. Hospapa for example are currently offering to do it for £1.99 per month including VAT and this will also give you access to their easy to use on line web site creation tool. Hospapa details can be found here
I would second Pigfarmer's suggestion of using Blogspot. It's free and really easy to set up and use. You get a choice of several different base templates to start with then you can customise your design, layout, colours and settings etc and add various features as you go along. The spam filter is also excellent and instantly recognises any spam comments you may get, though there are various security settings you can use to minimise any spam. I use it for my blog and apart from a couple of random minor issues which were easily sorted out I've been more than happy with it.
