There was me thinking when we retire we might rent a small national trust property.
They are in the news for treating some of their tenants badly. One couple signed a six month contract and are now at the end of their six month let and have been told to leave. At the start of the let they assumed, and were apparently verbally informed by the agent, that the let would possibly be extended. They have spent £6,000 bringing the place up to their standard. None of which they can take with them.
What a silly thing to do. Would you as a renter make such improvements.
I saw that on the news earlier. There was also a farmer that had invested in a flock of sheep ideal for where he was renting a farm. He's been told the same thing.
The fact that their stories are similar says to me that they have been misled.
Presumably the same law applies to NT rented properties as any other, so they are free to give tenants notice to quit within the constraints of UK law? Probably this is about perception & 'making a good story' in the press. One does tend to see the NT as a 'good' landlord with tenants renting long term & this just suggests they are much the same as any landlord which to run on commercial lines they need to be.
They will have had an assured shorthold tenancy, the agent was right in that the let could possible be extended, just as every AST can be.
No one buys a house without legal representation. Renting should be no different, especially if you intend spending thousands on a house you don't own.
I use to be a member and packed it two yeasr ago, glad I did. After seeing that on TV .They will never get a penny more out of me If they treat people like that.

+1. Who in their right minds spends 6K during their first 6 months tenancy, no matter what was (allegedly) said.
We get good value from our membership. It gets us out and about and visiting properties we'd otherwise never see, given the cost of parking and admission for non-members. And we've always got a warm welcome.
We'll be renewing.

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it
The NT have hundreds of house/farms and assorted land and buildings which are rented out.
I feel they have been treated reasonably harshly in all this because there must be loads of happy renters.
As mentioned above, would you spend a fortune on a property that has a short lease on it?
I would want it in black and white that I had some security, reading the comments from the upset tenants, they are upset when the trust did not renew their lease, despite the trust not promising to in the first place.
I think the renters were hoping that the trust would renew....
Madness to spend significant sums doing up a rental property without an ongoing written contract. Why would anyone believe the NT would renew or treat tenants any better than any other landlord?
What seems to be missing from the report is why the tenancies aren't being renewed. I suspect that there must have been some sort of breach of tenancy - perhaps making modifications to a listed property without permission.
I'm a member of the NT and think that they do a great job looking after all the house and countryside for the benefit of the nation - definitely a case of social ownership at its best.

Like every press report you only get a small part of the story. Kitchens are landlords fixtures and fittings, why a tenant has replaced it isn't explained.
I sometimes think there should be an equivalent of Trip Advisor for landlords. Some of them are outrageous.
Thankfully, the ex is moving out of my house this weekend and OH and I are moving back in. I'll be very glad to see the back of his landlord, and live in a house where the shower works and we can open the windows without pigeons getting in. And as for the smell of the dead one in the chimney...
