I bought one of those for friends who enjoyed walking, and they really appreciated having their home in the centre of the map; it made planning excursions easier.

Ordnance Survey have dramatically reduced the price of their 1:25000 digital maps. It may be better to wait until these price reductions filter through.

I use these for when I go rallying; for some rallies I can reduce 6 Landranger maps down to 2 - a huge saving.

Why are Ordinance Survey maps so much better than the equivalent paper maps of France?

Admittedly 30 odd years ago, but I was staying in the Vercour area and their maps were just not particularly detailed or useful. There were maps of ski runs and foot-paths, even climbing routes but not an overall map like the 1:500 we have. Found Spanish maps weren't a lot better either. I ADORE maps - is it a British thing?
