It starts in touch screen format, you can either click your pc desktop background picture which is in one of the windows, or just hit the windows key, one in at bottom left of keyboard. If you have 8 then free upgrade to 8.1 & you get the start button back at bottom right of desktop screen, or if you want the functions put cursor to top right corner of screen.
All the above takes milliseconds, I can't see the complaints, if folk managed to work out how to use their pc's in the first place whats the complaint about 8.1? Even though you have to waste about one tenth of a second changing screens at the start it still boots up far quicker than any previous Windows OS.
I was very happy with Windows 3.1 and I've been very happy with Windows XP, but I expect I'll be getting a new machine soon that will come with Windows 8. From just a couple of minutes searching around the net I've found loads of advice on how to get Windows 8 (or 8.1) working how you want it including how to get the PC to boot straight into the desktop rather than the standard tile screen. Just google it.

Re Win 8 how the hell do I stop it keep reverting to the new screen. I don't have a touch screen laptop.
From the touchscreen mode go to desktop PC mode & right click on taskbar at bottom of screen, click properties, opens 'Taskbar and Navigation properties', click Navigation, check box 'When I sign in or close all applications on a screen, go to desktop instead of start' click Apply then OK. Then when you start up it will go straight to desktop not touchscreen first.
