Firstly, you will need to find a good broadband coverage, then download either TV catchup or BBC iplayer, or Itv Catchup, from any of these you should be able to watch TV for free.
Im using a Galaxy Note tablet to type this post, and often use it to watch Tv in a different room in my house if the Grandchildren are watching C-beebies with my OH in the lounge. TBH, it works fine off my own broadband, but l have never managed to get a strong enough signal to use it via a hotspot, or by any of the free wi-fi places such as McDs or in pub chains that offer the service, although the tablet works fine in these for surfing the web, opening emails ect, reading posts on here, and replying to facebook messages ect.
Im sure that someone will be along soon that may have a different way of connecting to watch tv, as my last Notebook used a dongle, and l did manage to pick some programmes up to watch through that.

TV Catchup used to have an android app, but I've just been on to search for the link for you and the app has been removed from the Play Store.
Don't know if that was by Google or TV Catchup, or when or if it will be back, so running it in your web browser may be the only option at present.

I use both TV Catchup and FilmOn apps on my Galaxy Note phablet. I also use apps for specific channels catch up services - some of which will enable you to download programmes to watch offline.
There are loads of free apps in the Play Store for TV although not all are British.

Another Samsung Note tablet user here - I find it great for watching stuff my OH isn't interested in. You do need a decent internet connection though.
NB be wary of using your mobile phone as a wifi hotspot (if you phone has this capability) as you can use up your data allowance very quickly and end up with a huge bill. Your best bet is to buy a separate wifi 3G dongle with a data-only SIM card - there are some good deals available online.

Tablets don't have usb ports and as the Hudl doesn't have 3g you would need a portable wifi hotspot as stated above or you may be able to use a phone but be careful of your data allowance!

If you are a Virgin customer, you should be able to download the Virgin Media Anywhere app to your device (subject to compatibility). You can use it like a remote control for your TV when at home, or for watching either On Demand or live streamed TV when away.
