Hello all, it's certainly been a while!! Well, this is fairly complicated but here goes.
I currently work in a school as an LSA and redundancies are inevitable due to numbers on roll etc. We all have to re - apply for our jobs which will involve a formal interview. There will probably be two people leaving with the amount of hours that the school needs to lose. We will know in March if we have our jobs in September. At the moment our contracts are safe up until 31st August.

Anyway, I applied for a job in another school with more hours and a higher level position and was interviewed on Friday - I was successful but now I have so many thoughts in my head that I can't think straight - as to why I'm heading on here. The contract is the same length as the one I have at the moment with no guarantee of extension in September. I will have to wait and see what happens - I appreciate that with this kind of job these things are normal but im just so unsure of what to do next. If I stay where I am I will be doing less hours and getting paid less but will know in March whether I have a job in September. If I leave then I will be full time with more pay and responsibility but uncertain as to where I will be in September.

Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas would be helpful but I know and appreciate that only I can make this decision but your input would be graciously appreciated!!

Thanks for listening. If you want any more information then just ask :)

Aw wow - this is a really difficult decision. I'm only replying because you had no replies and I feel really sorry for you being in this situation.

If only we had a crystal ball huh? I hope someone with more experience than me can come on and give you some advice. It seems to me that there's a risk whatever you decide to do.....good luck

From what you say either you know in March and keep present part time lower paid job or move and take better pay and full time hours until September.

If the decision went your way in March how long would your employment be secure for? Will there be a further round of redundancies?

If you take the new post and enjoy 6 months of good pay with a chance of an extension in September. Will this look better on your CV?

Basically its all chrystal ball gazing but there always seem to be adverts for posts in the education system so if it were me I'd go for it and take whats on offer now.

I'm in the same sort of job :) so can completely understand where you are coming from. Couple of things to consider, if you stay, are there people who are talking about leaving/early retirement? Or put another way, how likely are you to get a position? If you have already been offered another job, your current school will have already been asked for a reference, so your school will have already been given a heads up about your intention. The last thing is that if you are either coming from or going to an academy, your length of service will go to zero. If I was in your position, I'd go to the new school.

Having never done anything remotely exiting in my entire life and after 37 years, still in the same job I started at 16 (although I do still love it), on the basis that you got the new job relatively easily, I would definitely say go for the new job. What's that saying - you only regret the things you didn't do - doesn't always apply I know but I do sometimes wish I had been a bit more adventurous.

A school's financial year starts in April. The school which has offered you the new position will already know what budget they have for next year.
If the post is permanent I would take it.I think they would have advertised it as temporary if it was only for one term. Has this school told you they cannot guarantee you a job in September?

It is temporary. They said the school is expanding so it's possible of an extension I believe! I am going to hopefully see them tomorrow.

Thanks for all your input guys by the way. I think I am will go for it anyway as it's a higher position and will give me more experience. I have only worked in one school since my career change three years ago so It would be good to get experience in another school.

Hi,

I'm a teacher in a primary school and we have non-teaching staff who don't always know their job is secure, it often depends on the number of children we have in school who need dedicated support.

If you move, you will clearly have been selected because you offer something they currently don't have, thus surely you'll be a valued member of the team come the end of the year.

More money, more responsibility, more opportunity to show why you're indispensable?

Let us know how you go on.

Bill

Hey guys, feeling better today! I have a clear mindset now as just come back from a brief meeting with the head of new school - feeling very positive! Onwards and upwards :)

A real problem to decide. As neither can offer security then I think I would go for the job that appealed the most. It is hard to move out of a comfortable environment but a change is as good as a rest.

Have a read of Robert Frost poem, The road Not Taken, I always read this when faced with a difficult decision.

The only way to challenge, develope as a person, is to move out of your comfort zone, it gives you a buzz. I use to love being out of my comfort zone, when I started with the agency. Working with different people all the time, areas and settings

Hi guys - thought i would give a bit of an update on recent events.

It's the end of the Spring 2 term at school and the end of my first term at my new school - it's gone well! I've really enjoyed the different things i have been challenged with and the new people I have met. Lot's to learn and lots of names to remember - about 170 children and lots of adults too! In regards to my contract, it's being extended until February 2015 when it will be reviewed once again so i'm pleased about that.

Thanks for all the advice that you guys gave - it helped a lot :)
