As someone who has been in 'the game' for nigh on 39 years, there are good companies, and there are bad companies, but when you even it out, they are all about the same.
I am always wary of companies that sub contract a lot of stuff out. Hermes is a classic example. They use individuals to deliver parcels, as well as their own vans, and the service here can be sketchy. There are stories of these people leaving parcels in all sorts of places, and in some cases, not delivering them at all. You also have to ask if the home based courier has the correct goods in transit insurance should anything go wrong.
That said, I have used Hermes, and found them to be ok, if sometimes a little slow, whereas the big boys tend to be quicker, but more expensive, and they use their own vehicles, which will be fully insured.
I have had stuff destroyed beyond belief by Collect+, and would never use them again, whereas the RM tend to be quite good.
I have also used City Link, and found that even if you buy their cheaper service, majority of the time it gets delivered next day, and they are also very good.
If I send anything international, I always use someone like FedEx, or UPS, and the reason is, that they use their own vehicles throughout the journey, ( I used to work for FedEx international some years ago.) so less chance of something going missing when tracked, whereas the RM put it in the hands of the system of the country it's going to once it leaves these shores.
So at the end of the day, you get what you pay for, but what I tend to do if I sell something, is ask the buyer what sort of delivery service they expect/want, and then book and charge accordingly.
And in answer to the above, Wendy is right, as P2G, Interparcel, Parcelmonkey etc, are agents and not carriers, so because they 'buy' in bulk, are able to pass on the savings to us, the customer, but even there the prices can vary, so use them all to find the best price.
Good luck guys.
