can somebody explain to me why people bid on and then win an item on ebay when they have no intention of completing the transaction

I'm trying to sell my old astravan and mistakenly thought ebay would be the easiest and quickest way to do this , how wrong could I be ?

1st listed her just over 2 weeks ago ,auction ended and after 3 days no contact was made by the winning bidder, so I e-mailed him via ebay, at which point he then informed me he didn't have the funds to complete the purchase and now wanted to cancel the transaction....why the hell bid at all then , in light of this I had to go through the rigmarole of opening a non-payment case in the resolution centre, which meant I had to wait 7 days before I could list it again.

as I'm an eternal optimist ,I re-listed my van and joy of joy's she "sold" and for a higher price than the first time, or so we thought, 2 days after winning the auction the bidder contacted me to say he lived in Norwich and could not get upto Sheffield to collect it and as no money had been exchanged he now wanted to cancel his transaction.....again why the hell bid in the first place if collection was going to be an issue , my items location was quite clearly visible on the listing so again a non-payment case has had to be opened.

needless to say I still have my van but she now has a for sale sign in the window and will sit on the drive until she is sold or rots away

I think in future i'll stick to only selling items on ebay that have to be posted.

sorry folk's rant over

I agree its a pain but after a few strikes they are kicked off ebay. We had one refused all contact untill ebay removed them due to so many strikes. Guess what they were in contact then ok!

At least you're opening non paying disputes so these idiots collect strikes. Too many people just cancel and let them get off

Preloved, Gumtree and UKCS is the places to go. I wouldn't touch ebay with a barge pole.

seems daft to me not to open non-payment case's, if you don't ebay charge you for inserting your listing but if you open a case you get a final fee credit, at least then the time-wasters haven't cost you money

I know this goes on but I have bought a lot and sold a reasonable amount on ebay and never had a problem. I have also sold many vehicles and encourage people to come and view and then we do the deal.

Those that get blocked on ebay no doubt come back with another i.d.

its not quite as easy to come back with another ID nowadays, ebay have a lot of systems in place now to link accounts together, ip numbers, phone numbers, bank details are just basic ones but they have others so they do catch up with banned people eventually.

I have sold successfully on Ebay but have to agree with LobeyDosser. I much prefer to sell on here and Preloved.

we "won" an ebay auction for a 2009 cruiser as an only bidder for£2500:00, was in Newcastle upon tyne, but at that price was well worth it to travel that far, OH made contact for arrangements to collect and pay c o collection. she refused to sell as she wanted £4500:00 ,she was struck off even as a first time seller for flagrant abuse of "the rules"............miffed is only a slight undestatement

It amazes me what people do on ebay. Some years ago I sold a collection only, cash on collection item which was quite expensive. After 4 days the buyer hadn't contacted even after reminder messages and ebay invoices being sent to him so I then mailed him to say I would have to report him as a non-payer if he didn't make contact. He then paid into paypal costing me quite a lot of money in fees, but then still wouldn't contact me to collect.

Eventually I had to contact ebay and get them to cancel the deal so I could sell it to somebody else. Ebay were very helpful in this. I tried to refund the buyer but he didn't claim the money from Paypal so they returned the money to me. Despite several attempts to refund him he just wouldn't cooperate so I was never able to...would be nice if everybody donated money to me like that

I sold my little campervan through Preloved. Ebay is a big market, I tried it there as well. The same person had seen the adverts on both, came to see, and I pulled the ad. on ebay and sold for an agreed price, re. the Preloved ad.

Instead of selling through an auction on ebay, try a classified advert on there. No bidding, no haggling.

Or delete your cookies and cache as I found out tonight when listing an item on Ebay and a note come up saying it appeared I was using another computer and gave me a security code and told me to contact them.
I phoned Ebay on the 0800 number given and the girl told me it was a security measure and that my recent deletions had caused the problem.
The girl fixed it for me and gave me a security code and then told me to hang up and she phoned back and asked me to give her the code.

Not complaining as it appears to be another security measure for my account.
