My vet told me that travel sickness in dogs can be a two-fold problem.  Young dogs can suffer from genunine motion sickness - they then begin to associate travelling by car with feeling and being sick, and it becomes a psychological response that goes on long after then would have grown out of puppy motion sickness.  My vet also told me that, if that's the case, the usual travel sickness tablets that cause drowsiness don't work in the long term as they make the dog sleep, but don't break cycle.  She prescribed some non-drowsy anti-sickness tablets (they certainly weren't cheap - I think they were about £16 for 8, and my JRT needed 2 per journey!).  She also suggested a stuff called 'DAP spray' (it smells like a lactating bitch, so calms dogs down - humans can't smell it) - again, not cheap.  However, we were going to Wales on holiday (4+ hour journey each way) and there was no way we weren't going, so I paid the money and hoped ....

We gave Bob her tablets, covered the seats (as usual), sprayed the car with DAP, made sure we had a good supply of wipes, water, etc for the clean up, and set off ..... Bob panted like a steam train for the whole journey, but wasn't sick once!  Same on the return journey.  We also used the tablets for one journey the week after our holiday, then decided to see what happened without (didn't really want to fork out £16 every 2 weeks for more tablets!) - SUCCESS!!  Bob is now 5 and hasn't been sick in the car since she had these tablets (she was just 1 year old then).  She still pants like a steam train, but she's happy to get in the car and can travel any distance now.
