I'm currently setting up a helmet cam for walking & as a DofE Expedition Assessor on a Petzl Sirocco helmet with an LED Lenser H14 head torch ... the Lenser will be the heaviest component of the set up by a long way !
I'm trying to keep everything as light weight as possible (hence the Sirocco) and have gone for the Mobius Action Cam with a waterproof case.
I don't have an iPad (or any other Apple device) but as the Mobius records to a QuickTime format, I can't see you having any problems. The video it records is excellent
Not sure if it's what you are looking for, but my Son now 29 does lots of filming when out on his bike, and uses a GoPro results are nothing short of stunning.

A GoPro was what I wanted when I first started looking but they are (a) a lot heavier, and (b) a helluva lot more expensive
The little mobius thing I posted about cost me £59 plus another £19 for the waterproof case
The GoPro does produce excellent results but there are also some good cam-to-cam comparisons on YouTube between GoPro & Mobius ...... from these, I chose the Mobius

nowt beats the go pro
as for quicktime formats i think you will find it hard work to cut any section out of long videos.
as for weight seriously its like just shy of 5 ounces with the protective case.
look around you dont need the latest one the pro 2 was just as good as the 3
shop around be amazed what deals you can get ( or second hand kayaking sites, climbing sites, MB sites) just worth a look

Thanks for the replies, I'll have to look into those.
I've been looking at the contour roam, the gopro looks big but I've only seen them on line, can they be fitted onto the side of a helmet, does anyone know?

Yep my Son has got the GoPro Hero HD which must be about 3 years old now, size wise it about the size of a box of match's. to me that's quite tiny.
You can mount the GoPro to just about anything, he mostly uses the Helmet mount and a Chesty (chest mount).
He has mostly used it for filming downhill MTB stuff, so they must be quite robust little cameras.
He is looking to upgrade to the GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition, now seems a good time as prices have dropped, no doubt due to there being some good similar type cameras around, but I notice the BBC use the GoPro quite a lot.
The lad is quite into his filming and uses a mix of Canon 70D DSLR and the GoPro.
A camera that runs the GoPro hero very close is the Drift Ghost HD. It is also waterproof as it is, has standard tripod mounting hole and lens can be rotated to keep image right way up whichever way the camera is mounted

quite robust you say
id say harder than chuck norris
Can I ask your advice please? I've been hoping to get one of these for my son, but it needs to be cheap and cheerful as he's only young.
I've seen this , but it doesn't appear to come with any accessories like the sd card, mounts etc which all add up.
Is it a good budget buy or any cheaper options? It needs to have the waterproof case option, but basic is fine. Thanks :-)
