It depends on how many days you're planning on taking for the journey. I'd want to get a lot further down than Manchester on the first leg. That's more of a breakfast stop.
Don't know if you've seen Mrs. Bonce's reply to your other thread, suggesting this site (which is, of course, south of Manchester as you requested), but as daveyjp points out, it might be better to aim for somewhere beyond Bristol (Weston-super-Mare perhaps, or even somewhere in Devon?)
Or if you really want the Welsh side of the Severn, take the M50 at Strensham and have a look at sites around Monmouth, then use one of the Severn crossings (Toll charged Westbound) back to the M5.
yeah I know what you mean thx for the replys maybe just drive down in one day any idea how long in one day I would say about 8 hours I know it depends on traffic conditions was look for some were nice to stay on the way down
where in Cornwall? deepest Cornwall ,Newquay and beyond will be a good 4 to 41/2 hours steady drive from Bristol specially if towing with no serious delays!! as the amount of roadworks on the M/way in the Midlands[current any way] not sure if they will be complete for the summer, will slow you even more then i would opt for Gloucester as a stop over ,and head into the south west refreshed for the second leg

depends when you are going, ie where in cumbria are you setting off from and where in cornwall are you heading, when we go ( live in stockport) we usally aim to stop near tewksbury cc. or cheltnam. from junction 36 of the M6 to manchester is only 2hrs taking it easy. and there are a lot of sections of the M6-M5 having roadworks and a 50 mph limit.

going to penzance falmouth area Gloucester might just be the right place thx for that idea
we are in Cheddar, will be in Marazion from next Saturday [M5 from Edithmead and merge on A30 beyond exeter, A30 is a good road now, takes you all the way into Penzance ]and anticipate, from here a steady 3 hour trip hopefully with no hold ups[some hope!! [having to stop in Newquay en route for 2 hours for a family visit]...As long as you get there safe and sound, time is of no importance

thank for all the help seems like the gloucester area is the best place to stop off I am setting off from near Carlisle then heading down M6 its gonna be later on in year summer time nice steady pace 50/60 down m6
we live in North Manchester and stop at Tewkesbury if away late or try to get down to Cheddar area if away earlier. If in Caravan club they have sites in both places that are great for walking in and doing some exploring.
If you can try to avoid doing the Bristol to Cornwall section on a Saturday, better still if you can do overnight or very early in the morning. I can see the M5 from a bridge in my village & on a Saturday peak season it's a car park.
