I am in the same predicament. I should be on them and tried quite a few. The quality of my life was affected so much that I decided I wouldn't take them any more.
I have other painful but not life threatening conditions and felt I couldn't cope with the debilitating side effects statins gave me,
I am 74 and I will just watch what I eat and exercise just like my dad did who lived into his eighties. No idea what his cholesterol levels were.

Hi

I have tried at least five different statins as my cholesterol is high as it is inherited from my father and i have suffered bad muscle pain, back ache , liver pain so i have stopped taking them without telling my gp. It got to the stage as i could not get up and down the stairs or do normal day to day things.I have an appointment with my doctor in the next week or so and there is no way i will go back on them.I now walk a couple of miles a day have no problem doing everyday things, some peoples bodies are anti statin and i am one of them so as one of my previous doctors said you are between the devil and the big blue sea.

Thanks for all your reviews my mum went back to doctors thee other day and he reduced the dose but she as not taken any so far but shecwas adviced to go on them some years ago as her brother had a stroke

Reading this has been so helpful. i was put on satins, not because of cholesterol which is well controlled but because I am diabetic & over 50 according to my doctor. I have been on them for 9 months & been finding it hard to sleep. I also struggle some days walking.I never thought it may be satins just getting older.
I am going to talk to my doctor about it thanks.

Statins Have kept me alive, yes they have side effects some people affected more than others.
The truth is we all have choices I chose a little discomfort and a longer life some may wish to have a more comfortable less painful but shorter life

I have no intention in coming off them. I was given them after I had angioplasty with stent done. I believe they have kept me alive as heart disease seems to run in my family. Lost my sister this week and she was only 50 to what looks like a heart attack although we are waiting on the post mortom results as it was sudden and in her sleep.

That's awful Geoff - I'm so very sorry. I hope that you get some answers form the post mortem as it will help you to get your head around what happened. x

This is an interesting and very useful thread. I am on statins for a few years now, and had the brand changed when they decided to give me a stronger dose. I am getting a lot of back pain now, muscular pain.
The other really useful thing suggested by one poster is to wear a medi-alert. I take 6 or 7 different medications and I'm sure it would be vital for a doctor to know about them if I was taken in to A&E etc.

Thanks. Only posted that to show the plus side to statins IMO. The only problem is getting the balance right as statins not only lower your LDL cholesterol but your HDL cholesterol which is the good one and should be high. I was also given fenofibrate to help balance them out. I have regular blood tests to keep an eye on things and so far my levels are fairly constant.
