Ive not long started using paypal and have sold something through gumtree tonight. The buyer used paypal and im sending the items to him but ive read bits about this charge back is paypal safe enough or am i worrying over nothing dont fancy getting stung.

I just wouldn't do, happened to a friend of mine for a designer handbag.

She lost the money and the bag (yes, they are not required to return the 'damaged' items they are claiming back for)

You can log in to your paypal account and refund the payment, and contact the seller and tell them you have changed your mind and are not willing to accept paypal.

Edit your listing to say 'cash on collection'.

Chargeback is when somebody pays by debit or credit card and for some reason or another they are not happy with the goods, or the goods don't arrive, or not as described etc; and they can then claim the money back through their bank.

They have to write to their own bank to claim the money and their own bank then gets it back from your bank, so it's not an easy process. They have to do this within 120 days.

I presume if they paid using Paypal then they would have to claim via Paypal to get their money back but that applies to any bank so Paypal is no exception.

Obviously it is a system that could be abused but the majority of people buying and selling things are, like you, honest and reliable and just want a quick deal.

On the other side of the coin if you use Paypal for payment then they offer some seller protection against fraudulent deals and would be there to mediate if there was a problem with the deal.

Unfortunately very few things we do today are totally secure from those who want to steal or defraud so all you can do is hope you don't become a victim.

I've been using Paypal for 10 years or more and have only been "stung" once, many years ago when someone had an incorrect address on Paypal and, of course, the item never arrived and he claimed his money back from Paypal and I got charged £17 admin fee.

More and more companies are offering Paypal as a payment method so I use it quite a bit because it means I don't have to keep putting my credit card details on different sites.

As miserly says, post the items "signed for" if you can, it's always a good idea.

I recently sold my son's car on eBay and stated cash on collection only. It was sold as seen and I had visions of it going wrong and chargeback kicking in.

I think it protects the buyer but does nothing for the seller.

I didn't realise you could use paypal on Gumtree?

Paypal can and do perform chargebacks, almost always taking the buyer's side in any dispute. However, you're still protected by the law, provided you take a few basic steps to protect yourself.

Firstly, write up a delivery note and require the buyer to sign it when they collect the goods, stating that they're happy with the goods (everything in good order etc).

Secondly, make sure you get the buyer's address. Ask for ID and check it properly.

Finally, if the buyer lies to Paypal and obtains a chargeback, simply file a county court claim through moneyclaim.gov. You can claim back the original amount paid, plus your costs (exact details of what you can claim for are on the website).

You can pay for a lot of things with Paypal these days, even Weightwatchers monthly pass! It's much more convenient than having to put your card details in every time you buy anything.

Paypal is one of the fastest growing ways to pay for items with many large retailers using it, Chargebacks do happen but theres hundreds of thousands of good transactions to the few bad transactions, Anything you send should be sent using online trackable signed for services you then have quite a powerful seller protection system,

Many people dont realise that Gumtree is a subsidary of ebay and as ebay and paypal are linked it stands to reason they are going to allow paypal.

All forms of payment carry a risk. Even cash for forged notes, be it with or without the payer's knowledge. I have used paypal successfully for years. Never problem.

Paypal are not issuing chargebacks willy nilly. They may do so in situations of dispute after investigation. Probably the safest way online for honourable traders.

I asked the good folk on here not long ago about selling a car on Ebay using paypal. Loads of helpful advice received.The car was a genuine sale and valued at £9000 or nearest offer--I was gobsmacked at the amount of buyers who offered the full asking price (using paypal) and would send somebody to collect it..even from France!The scam comes in when they claim to have not received the item and get the refund from paypal who in turn chase you for the money.Advert stated NO paypal..but they still tried.On the plus side-Ive never had any trouble .with the 100+ smaller transactions Ive done

Just had an Email from PayPal advising a shed load of changes to their legal terms,which appear to be applicable from June 17th.
One in particular regarding Buyer protection changes is increasing the time allowed for buyers to raise a Dispute from 45 days to 180 days from the date on which payment was made.
Yes 6 MONTHS TO RAISE A DISPUTE FOLLOWING A PURCHASE !!!
Sellers beware .....................
