There have been loads of complaints about the sound quality and muffled dialogue in episode 1. I didn't get round to watching tonight to see if it was better; there's a good story in there somewhere, but it was a bit too murky for me really.

I turned over to see and yes they have tweaked the sound but it sounds unrealistic now - almost like it's been dubbed.
The lead actress is terrible - she mumbles, whispers, does not open her mouth fully and the accent is more Suffolk than Cornish.

Story so far, girl stays with aunt and uncle in Inn and finds out he is a wrecker and a sinister man. Sinister Aunt creeps round the Inn and puts up with violence from her husband. Girl walks up and down the moor and occasionally dresses as a man. Local vicar has sinister sister and girl gets muddy dress/trousers from wandering on moor and tells tales on her uncle.
Not sure of the reasons for any of his because the characters all have a mumbling problem, probably caused by the local water.
Star of the show is the sinister Inn itself which is not somewhere anyone would want to stay. Even in those days Inns had to offer some kind of comfort.

I managed fine with the dialogue and the dialect in Shetland; they definitely goofed with Jamaica Inn.

Have to say the final episode was very good indeed. I truly winced at the scene of the wrecking and it made me think of all the horrors of those times. The fear and dread became the focus and I was gripped by the emotion of it all and the sense of loathing was overwhelming. As good as any other horror story but with a twist of period reality crime. More a credit to Daphne Du Maurier than the BBC though.
Why on earth did they spoil the start of what could have been a major production coup.
