A quick note for anyone with an exemption certificate from the DWP for tax on their vehicle.
I've just been told by the Post office that my wife's certificate is invalid as it should have been changed when we got a new car last year. This is despite the, now closed, local DVLA office using it to issue a disc last year and putting the new registration number on it and stamping it. A check with the DWP confirmed that this is so, although the certificate does NOT mention it. A new certificate takes up to 10 days to be sent, which means the car would be un-taxed, and although the office dealing with the certificates is less than 1 mile away I could not pick one up personally. Fortunately the person I spoke to has offered to drop one off on his way home, so full marks for that, but no marks for clarity.

The exemption certificate can be used for several years providing you are taxing the same vehicle because the vehicle registration number is stated on the certificate so it's obvious that if you change your vehicle you would then require a new exemption certificate that corresponds to the vehicle you want to tax. It doesn't need any clarification really as it's like using an insurance policy for your old vehicle and expecting it to be automatically transferred to another vehicle with a different registration number.
Wow what brilliant service for the man to drop it of for you,we all have a lot of problems taxing and paying for vehicles so I think you won out there :)

The point I was trying to make was that the DVLC were happy to issue a new disc last year and just write the new registration on a corner of the certificate and stamp it. No mention of needing a new certificate from DWP or on the certificate itself. Just trying to save anyone else from making the same assumption that I did.
Well the DWP chap was true to his word, got the new certificate teatime, What a star!! Absolutely identical to the old one except the reference number, no mention of the vehicle until I put the reg no in the top right margin.

Sorry if I misunderstood your post Pete but it seems like you were the victim of another one of these inexperienced staff members who have no real knowledge of what's really required. It's common knowledge that many businesses and governmental departments employ new people offering the very basic training required who are paid the minimum wage due to constant government cut backs. However, it's always the customer that suffers at the hands of their negligence but can now understand the point you were trying to make. Basically as a result, it was a mistake on behalf of the DVLA and not yours.
