I bought a Lenovo G505 which I find pretty adequate. It has a 1Tb hard drive, good battery life (up to 6 hrs.) and a nice keyboard. Cost around £300.

I stripped out most of the junk that came with Win 8, set it to run in Desktop mode with Classic Shell to give it the look of XP. I scrapped IE and loaded Firefox 26, Thunderbird, AVG and OpenOffice.

So far, so good.

i dont know anything about computers and all these windows - i bought a laptop from tesco for 299.99 and iv had it 5 years now and it works fine. i dont even know what kind of windows it has to be honest - if you asked me id say a kind of plastic one that i give a wipe with a duster from time to time!

its worked well enough to spend a fortune of my savings on camping things, tents and all sorts, do ukcampsite, a few other forums and ebay, hotmail and banking which is all i use it for really.

hopefully it goes for another 5 years and then ill just get another tesco 299 one!

it says Dell on it so i guess thats the make and its been fine. - i also got tesco points so spent that on booze to take camping! - very happy!

Another vote for Dell computers and laptops here, as a family, we have tried several brands over the years, including Acer and HP, but its the Dell brands that have always given us the best service and least trouble, and our eldest Dell lappy is now coming up for 9yrs old, and still works fine with its original copy of Windows XP.

I tend to use my Samsung tablet for most of my internet needs these days, but if l ever needed to buy a full sized compurer again, it would be another Dell. Its also a trusted brand by commercial users, most of our local council offices and banks are equipped with Dell branded computers and equipment.

I bought a new PC 12 months ago with windows 8 replacing an XP.I am not very good with computers. A member of the family who is very good with computers got a new windows 8 and done nothing but moan and told me not to get one. I had little choice as nearly all new ones came wit windows 8 I was told by my grandson to install classic shell which I did on my own. So far no trouble at all. It was only after I found out that my HP computer had a start menu installed on my task bar.

We went for a Lenovo G500 in the end, at the recommendation of a trusted friend who used to frequent these forums.

It has 6GB Ram and 1TB Hard drive, hubby has had a go of windows 8 and it isn't as scary as he anticipated.

Thanks all.

I got both my son and Mum a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8. For my Mum it's her first laptop so she has nothing to compare Windows 8 with. My son seems to have worked it out fairly well too (He had Vista before)

I set up both laptops and although I did find it slightly odd and had to search around for some stuff I did eventually figure it out and once I found the desktop that made life much easier.
