Dk168 This is why I have got concerns about using the free gym at work. There is no instructor or trainer there ever. You just sign a form confirming that you know how to use the equipment. It is also a dis-claimer.

As a qualified weight training/aerobics instructor myself I would say you are right to be concerned about using a gym if there is no instructor or trainer there - if you've never been to a gym before and don't know what you're doing you could do yourself far more harm than good. Also, how can you sign a form to say you know how to use the equipment if there's no-one there to show you?? Plus from a health and safety point of view, there should really be someone on duty in there in case of any accidents.

DK168's gym sounds excellent, and if you go to one that's what you should be looking for - instructors/trainers who know what they are talking about, medical questionaire, a programme tailored to your specific needs and goals and a thorough explanation of how each piece of equipment works and how to use it properly.

If you're serious about going to a gym and you think it would help then join a proper one if you can afford it - many have free or reduced-price 'taster' sessions to see if you like it before committing to full membership. Once you've got a personal programme and you know what you're doing then there'd be nothing stopping you using the one at work as an added 'extra' as long as you aren't in there on your own.

One of the reasons I joined my local gym is because I am fed up of working irregular hours, which makes arranging evening activities of any kind difficult.

Hence I looked into joining a gym. Mine happens to be within walking distance from home, open 24/7, and it works out cheaper than attending an evening dance or badminton class in another town.

Being a member, I don't pay for any class fees and can participate in as many classes as I like.

It is never too late to change, and I am gunning for a Karsten for next year!
