I agree, making wine from fresh fruit and veg is much nicer and cheaper in the long run. We make a lethal Elderberry Wine thats very potent in Alcohol and similar to port in taste, my OH likes it with chilled lemonade as a long drink.
My favourite is Orange wine, a lovely fruity white wine made from over ripe oranges scrounged from our greengrocer for a few pence each, with sultanas, sugar and wine yeast. The key is to keep everything sterile, and keep the dreded wine fly out of your brew. The finished Orange wine is rather like GrandMarnier liquer, and is nice in an Orange trifle, or used to make a sauce to accompany roast Duck.
Our recipe book is called Country Wines, and is a couple of decades old, but still serves us well, including making autumn Pear cider, and Apple 'Brandy' from the windfalls on our trees, which ferments naturally from the yeasts already present in the fruit skins.
