my driving licence expires in the first week in August.
last month my wifes ran out, but she received a reminder form which we filled in and took it into the post office for them to take new photo and proof read it....job done.
Whilst there i produced my licence and asked the guy if i could renew mine whilst there, where upon he said no, and went on to say when i receive the reminder is soon enough, so did not get done, and of course put out of mind....now here i'm starring at the deadline and NO REMINDER!!!!!mutter ##??!!#
If you've got a current passport you can do renewal online but if not, like me, you have to ring DVLA and get form D1. You'll need a proper passport foto, countersigned and the person signing it has to sign form. Takes photocopies of front and back of existing photocard license and paper one if you have that and of form before posting.

Hey,
If you can't renew it online and must compete the form etc whatever you do do not send back your original licence! Instead claim you have 'lost' it. Costs the same amount to replace but the difference is you have physical proof of your entitlements. When renewing you get the option to replace due to lost licence. They will not accept photos or photocopies as proof of entitlement unless there legal copies.
There have been 100's of cases of licenses coming back with missing entitlements.
Apologies if I didn't make it clear - you send originals and keep copies in case needed. You also need those copies to check they've included all categories of entitlement on the new ones. It's up to you if you want to say you've lost it.
Can't help with PO service - no such luxuries here!

As above before sending off your old licence get a photocopy, I renewed mine on the 10 year rule in April last year, when I got my replacement back they had removed my entitlement to ride a motorcycle. I passed my full bike test in 1981 and driving test in 1982, and although I hadn't ridden a bike for about ten years I had the relevant licence.
After a few phone calls and the odd letter I got my bike entitlement added back in January this year, I have a friend who also sent his back and lost his PSV entitlement he works for Arriva Buses and was unable to work for 12 weeks, luckily his employer knew he had a PSV licence as he had worked for them for a number of years and they just gave him other duties whilst they helped him sort it out.

Have you heard that the fees are coming down to renew you licence and cut for new drivers as well. So would try online to get it cheaper.
Isn't this a consultation as yet?
