Does anyone have experience of either Rug doctor or Karcher hire (HSS) Karcher looks an easier machine to handle but Rug is cheaper.

I need to clean my lounge, hall and stairs and maybe a few bedrooms.

Unfortunately we have a moth problem and it looks like my best hope in saving the carpets is to clean then spray. I realise it's going to be a battle.

The lounge and hall are good quality wool but I think upstairs are all man-made.

Please don't suggest professional because I really can't afford it!

We have a Vax, use it often as we have pets, and lend it to friends. Ask around - you may be able to borrow one yourself.

Just used the Rug Doctor this weekend,hired one a few years back.Great gets your carpets really clean.I have a vax which I use in between but its not as good as the Rug Doctor.

I think Rugdoctor is the best out there at the moment. Unless you have a local firm that can come in and do it.

Our lounge/diner carpet has been down since 1995 and even though everyone still takes their shoes off its gone beyond it now. Hopefully will get laminate in the diner and carpet in the lounge next year.

Thanks all

Hubbie bought the house here about 20 years ago, so the carpets are ancient! The wool one in the lounge is losing elasticity and is rather moth eaten around the edges now. When the teens have left home it will be replaced. The hall carpet is also wool and extremely good and dense so I need to try to save it!

It's only a 3 bed semi but carpets are so expensive

Sorry to butt in, but we've just had some building work done and the lounge carpet is looking rather grimy (despite my best efforts!)

Never used a Rug Doctor before and was wondering if anyone has used it on a man made carpet & do you have to buy Rug Doctor cleaning fluid?

Yes, it works great on a man made carpet. You generally buy the fluid at the same time. If you're lucky, there is a package deal for machine, shampoo & defoamer.

BYW, I had a lot of hassle trying to hire Rug doctor from Tesco. You used to be able hire them in-store, but now you have to book it on-line and get a booking code. Tescos were less than helpful so I now go to Morrisons.

If carpets are good quality wool, check the small print carefully before using any water-based cleaning method in case shrinkage occurs. Just a thought! My carpets are bog standard polypropelene (sp?) and Rug doctor has cleaned them up, no problem. You need to develop the knack of co-ordinating the trigger action with the pulling back of the machine to avoid puddles, which will occur if you squeeze the trigger with it stationary. Once you sort that out it's straightforward.

Asda have recently started hiring Rug Doctor machines. I'm assuming you pay & they give you the code to open the locker at the store. Will be giving it a go when we have moved back upstairs in the next couple of weeks.

I'm a carpet and upholstery cleaner with my own biz if its only 1 carpet I'm cheaper than superstore rental m/cs but if its a full house I give a good price and good service and don't charge extra for chemicals and haven't got to empty my m/c every 2 mins get wat you pay for

In our Asda you do it all online, pay and they give you a code to get the machine out. It's nothing to do with Asda as such, Rug doctor just rent the space
