In June this year I sold my Coachman Laser that I had had on a seasonal pitch for 5 years and bought an 18 year old static on a beautiful, informal site, where all vans are of a similar age. A lot of people thought me a fool but I have just had the best day ever. I sat and looked out of the window all day just studying the wildlife. Out of one window I have a small bird feeder - just a pole with 2 fat ball hangers & 2 seed trays. Running around the bottom collecting any seeds dropped by the birds was a couple of field mice. The birds were just fantastic, Blue tits, coal tits, great tits, chaffinches, robin, tree creepers, nuthatches, jays, collared doves and even pheasant perched on the edge of the feeders. Best of all though was with just a move of the head I have a hedge that was covered in hazel nuts, I say WAS because all day it has been covered in RED SQUIRRELS. It has been a joy to watch and I'm so pleased I made the move.

Nice :) I guess it's easy to take for granted, as I live in the country and see this everyday (we had regular badgers, owls and others a lot this year too). It great to see people appreciate the wonderful wildlife we have here. Autumn is a great time too, as they busy themselves for winter.

Hi Autopilot, I used to live on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, not far from where I had my tourer sited but now live in Newcastle on a main bus route so I appreciate my days away. Even when I lived in the country I never experienced anything like I did today because living in a house there was always work to be done and as you say you tend to take the wildlife for granted. The main thing about today was the amount of red squirrels - they were just stunning.
Forgot to mention the totally black nights where every star in the sky was visible - superb. I feel so privileged.

'What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?' W. H. Davies, 1870 - 1940.
He's not wrong; just watching things quietly is quality time, good for the soul, and everyone who has it should celebrate it and share it. (Especially the red squirrels!)

Sounds like you have had a lovely day. I like watching squirrels. I have been watching bats fly around the garden tonight.

It's a small site of only 34 caravans all round about the 20 year old mark but beautifully kept. The only problem is the toilets aren't plumbed into the sewer system so toilet emptying is still a chore. The site fees are only £900 for a seven month season and the site is directly opposite Thrunton Woods, near Rothbury in Northumberland. For me the situation of the site and the site fees far out weighs the shorter season (it's far too cold and wet in north Northumberland to use the van more anyway) or the toilet facilities. The site is called Coe-Burn and to me idyllic.
