Hi,

I was thinking about a trip to Scotland but have been rather put off by reports of anti -english sentiment being on the rise in Scotland in the press just lately.I don't want to have any kind of debate on the issue of independance, this is not the place for it,merely hear of experiences of fellow english folk who have visited Scotland recently,

Peter

Minority stuff going on by some nut jobs still harping on about 1745...The Clearances...Culloden etc etc...

Your friends were extremely unlucky to have met with this attitude....You come up to Scotland and experience the hospitality and genuine friendliness of the vast majority and your fears will be laid to rest...

The Indy debate has nothing to do with country wide anti English sentiment....There are far more important things to take into account when we put our X on that ballot paper in the coming days.....

There have been a few folk from down south had holidays up here recently who have posted in the "Trip Report" section....Who have enjoyed both the people and the scenery with no mention of this sort of nonsense....

Jelboy.

I can't imagine that you would be anything other than welcomed as a tourist to Scotland. If concerned just avoid the time around the referendum. Away from the big cities you might not even notice.

It is in the press so don't believe it.
I wouldn't take anything reported in the press as fact with regards to Scotland at the moment.
Rest assured my English born mother has never had any anti English comments in the 50 odd years she has been in Scotland.

Please think about the Commonwealth games......did you hear any English athletes being booed .........or were they cheered as loudly as any other nationality ( other than Scottish) ?

I believe any gripe is with Westminster not with individuals.

Anyway , go right up north and you'll know the locals by their English accents

We have just yesterday come back from a week in Fort William, and have had no anti English sentiments, in fact we are very welcome, Scotland is for tourists.

As Jelboy says.......our thoughts at the moment are on the huge responsibility which has been placed on our shoulders . A vote which will affect all Scottish generations to follow ......not on harranging visitors to our country and spoiling what is one of our major industries , tourism....

.....and if I make an observation which I suppose could be taken as political comment .......the OP proves the English press campaign is having at least some effect

We got back last weekend from a fortnight camping in Scotland and had a fantastic time.

We received a friendly welcome wherever we went, in fact we commented on how much friendlier Scottish site owners and campers were compared with their southern counterparts.

We had a fabulous time and I'm just getting round to thinking about booking for next year :)

I expect this is from the telegraph article about Siol stalking Jim Murphy.
Mr Murphy is a Scottish politician who got heckled and hit by an egg. I had the misfortune to have him as my NUS representative at Strathclyde Uni. I will hold off from my opinion of him.
There are sections of the no campaign who want to turn it into a them and us campaign for their own purposes. People of all nationalities, creeds and colour are welcomed in Scotland. Just look at the nationalist msp's from France and England .
You will enjoy your trip to Scotland and be warmly welcomed. Don't believe what you read in the papers. They have their own agenda.

Have to agree with all the comments about there not being any anti English hostilities in Scotland.

As someone said when you tour Scotland you will see just how many English people have set up home and business all over Scotland.

I was in Strathyre the other week and overheard a group of English tourists saying that they had been in the village for two days and had not heard a Scottish accent!!

So I treated them to a couple of "see you jimmy's" and "och aye the noo's" they left happy

My OH and I are English people living in Scotland. Not since the day we set foot here have we ever encountered any anti English sentiment. We were welcomed to the village and everywhere we went. The Scottish folk are very friendly to all, not just tourists. We have no fears or worries about living here now, during or after the referendum.

Come on up and see the wonders of Scotland and meet the Scots.

The reports were probably based on one drunk shouting his mouth off in a pub. Some editor somewhere probably struggling for a story and told some hack to write something.
Never known anyone to be unfriendly because I'm English in Scotland - plenty of jokes and mickey taking but nothing else.

I live in a small village in Aberdeenshire, and if it wasn't for incomers, many of such villages would have died.
There are English, American, German and Swedish amongst the people who have made this area their home and there's not a single word spoken against any of them.

Come to Scotland - one of the friendliest countries on Earth and enjoy their traditional greeting - "You'll have had your tea?".

The Mail are playing a blinder at the moment , I believe doing more for the 'Yes' vote though that's not their intention.
