Time and place for everything.
I am not condoning what the guardsman did.
I am merely pointing out that some people will criticise his actions in one time and place while cheering the same actions in another time and place.
Have we become such a staid society that time and place rules what amuses us?

Point is he had a job to do and knew what that job was. He chose to act a clown and make a mockery of his fellow regiment members.
Can't really see this is any deeper than that and to start questioning society etc

I don't see how he has made a mockery of his fellow regiment members. He was doing a job on his own and acted the clown on his own...has nothing to do with his mates.
When people see a guardsman outside the palace they don't think of him as part of an army. They think of him as a lone guardsman. If he acts the goat most will laugh and the odd few without a sense of humour will tut.
Since it has been plastered all over the internet then the lad has to be admonished, have his wrist slapped and told not to do it again.
I bet even the Queen had a giggle when she saw it as she most probably did.

What's wrong with a bit of light relief. I am sure army lads and gals, get up to worse antics than this, as coping mechanisms, taking into consideration, the tours he and others have done. Facing death every day. Never knowing whether it is their turn to die, lose limbs on an IED. Or killed by a suicide bomber, or shot dead by a sniper or in an ambush..
I don't think a fine or a few weeks in an military jail, won't be too much of a hardship.
Black mark on his record, he may already have medal!

Actually, I have more respect. It highlights character, by doing this, it shows true grit, which I would imagine the army would like.

Err - no! There really is a time and a place. I personally thought it really funny, but it was the wrong thing to do in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nothing to do with being staid and boring, just expectations.
The forces do want 'true grit', but service life teaches you to know when to act as an individual, and when to act as part of the team. This chap was expected to represent the team and didn't.
I'd hope he continues his career and makes something of it - the army needs characters :-) but they need to know when to be a character and when not.

"Let's face it, they ain't "guarding" anyone. They are there to put on a show for the public, exactly the same as they are at the Tattoo. "
Sorry unlike a Public Demonstration, they are specifically there to Provide Security.
The On Display Guards are just that, there are multiple levels of Duty. What you don't see are other Soldiers, behind the Scenes, providing the Second Line of Security.
In the event of a Alert those on Public Duty, immediately drop that role, and revert to Security duties, whilst in Dress Uniform.
Platoons rotate between On Display and Security Duties 24 hours a day. Security Duties never cease.
Even at the Edinburgh Tattoo, there are Troops in the background on Security Duty.

They must punish him - you can't have the muppet in the chorus line becoming more famous than the leading role. Don't these people know their place.
Like it! :-)
