The best camera is the one you have with you. I think DSLR's are too big to carry around regularly. A good starting point second hand could be a Panasonic Lumix G2 or G3 to give you an idea of the features and what is available.

After all my researching, phoning shops for advice and visiting shops I went for the micro four thirds - bought hubby the Olympus EM1. Its a fantastic camera and the photos on it so far are fab (yep, I gave him his Christmas prezzie!). And after all my hard work I managed to get the
Olympus EM5 for myself. Another fantastic camera. We are both booked onto a day course and have several books to read. We are already tip-toeing out of auto by using P mode although we could stay in auto and take great photos. The EM1 is a bit more advanced than the EM5 (reflected in the price) - the wifi facility is incredible - but quality of photos on both are great. I chose the EM5 ahead of other cameras not only because of the good spec but also because It felt right in my hand.
