A friend of mine (female) took up camping about 5 years ago, in her late 60's. She camps alone, but likes to go to events - eg, she's a keen cyclist so went to a Tour de France event, came with me to a jazz festival. It doesn't sound as though she's ever had any trouble and she thoroughly enjoys it

Hi and welcome, there are a few single, solo female campers on here, myself included. My OH hates camping, my son, is at that age now who does not want to camp with his mum.

Keep an eye out on the forums for people who do a get together. You will be more than welcome to join or you could decide for yourself where and when, post it and see if anyone wants to join you.

Welcome to UKCS.

Another lone female camper here, and I have been camping with just my dog since 2009 and love it.

For a peace of mind, I camp at sites with a warden on site or close by 24/7, such as the club sites of Camping and Caravanning Club (I am a member of C&CC).

I prefer to be near the facilities block and make my request for a pitch close by at time of booking.

Have fun camping, alone or otherwise.

Agree with all the above. I first went solo camping (in a tent) after splitting from 1st OH. He kept the tent, I kept the rest of the equipment; bought a cracking wee 2-person tent (why be squashed?). I put it up in the back garden first, so I didn't look like a pathetic wee wifey who couldn't put up a tent without help from a Man. Then I took myself off - not too far, first time, in case I couldn't hack it. It was bliss! I could get up and go to bed when I wanted to. I sat outside for breakfast, brewed fresh coffee & fried my bacon and hoped everyone nearby was jealous of me. I treated myself to a good steak & bottle of wine for my evening meal, read a book and enjoyed the silence. Didn't have a dog then, but have camped with one since and love that snuggly furry warmth and companionship (and added sense of security). Camping solo gave me back my self-confidence and a sense of power, and gave me something to tell folk back at work instead of moaning about the split. I didn't wild camp though, didn't fancy the lone trip into the bushes for a p--. I joined C&CC to be assured of on-site wardens and good facilities, but I never actually needed to call on the wardens.  I always found neighbours willing to help, without any of them ever making a nuisance of themselves by thinking I was lonely and needed to talk; I was never chatted up - camping isn't a good place to find a date. Go for it! you won't regret it.

Another lone female camper here, two kids aged 16 and 18 who no longer go camping so it's either no camping or go on my own. I'm 40 and have a little dog. I love camping on my own. When I go camping with other people I am suiting them and not myself. I can be really selfish (in a good way) when I go camping on my own. I treat myself to more meals out when I only have one to pay for. Or like Fiona says treat myself to a really good quality bit of steak and cook on the barbecue along with a few veggies.

Quite a few times on site I've seriously impressed some blokey blokes who were all raised eyebrows when I started pitching my tent. Truth is I have 14 tents and I could put any one of them to shame.

My one rule is that if there is no warden about at night, I get the emergency number from the warden before they close the office and save it on my phone.

Take it from me, camping alone is pretty safe and it's as much fun as you want it to be.

I've been camping alone since my now-ex and I split five and a half years ago and I love it. As luck would have it all the camping stuff we had was stored in my garage so when we split I kept the lot, though since then I've bought a bigger tent and a few other odd bits and pieces as I like things to be colour co-ordinated.

I always camp at sites with resident owners or on-site wardens and have never yet had any bad experiences or felt unsafe in any way and since I got used to being on my own it's never bothered me to be the only camper on site on some occasions. My two little dogs make great camping companions and my photography hobby gets me out and about exploring different places in the area where I'm camping.

Although I like to try new sites when I can I do have a small network of favourite sites which I go to regularly and where the owners/wardens know me, in fact only last week I got back from ten days at my favourite site in Norfolk, which I'm now writing about on my blog.

If you fancy camping solo then definitely go for it. I would suggest going somewhere not too far from home for your first time, and if you pick a site with some form of on-site security you should be more than fine.

A lot of singles I know have bought a Queshua tent, goes up easily, plenty of space. Needs a bit of practice to fold down again though!

Might be a good time to buy - end of year sales. Your ex will be hugely envious if you send him a selfie: sunset, glass of wine, comfy tent, some cute accessories...
