I didnt mention sealing them in just pushing it in. Its only for overnight and this stuff is very light and easy to handle, it wont be blocking anything in.

Most people suffer from smoke inhalation because they dont have properly functioning smoke alarms. Also the Op is on the first floor so jumping out of a window is going to be the last resort Assuming they can even fully open the windows.

Best sleep with a fire exstinquisher alongside their bed too eh ?

I wasn't commenting on your post specifically...just a general comment about fire safety and not to seal yourself in.

Being on the first floor is possibly the worst place you can be in the event of a fire as heat, flames and smoke rise...so jumping out of the window may be your only option.

Many people in flats keep a rope ladder for that reason and purpose built flats often have fire escapes. You could try tying sheets together I suppose

Please explain how the expensive "snake oil" heaters are more efficient.   With any electrical item you can't get more out than you put in.

A 500w unit does use half the power of a 1000w unit, but, being 100% efficient means you get 500w of heat and it will take a 500w unit twice as long as the 1,000w unit to heat the room to the same temperature.   The running cost will be the same to reach the same temperature.

A modern gas boiler is far more efficient than a old gas boiler, its the same as these, they are not convection heaters or oil filled they are completely different,l cant prove how good they are on here, but anybody looking for heaters I can only suggest they check them out,

Of course the cheapest method of keeping warm is running on the spot. If you do it for 10 minutes while wearing a thick woolly pully you won't need any other form of heating. If you do it while holding your breath there will be no carbon emissions. Might have to apologise to the people in the ground floor flat though.

Any comparison with a gas boiler is completely invalid as electric heaters have always been near enough 100% efficient - gas boilers never have been and never will be, although they are getting better.

This 100% efficiency goes right back to the single bar electric fire my granny had in the 1960s - you get out the same amount of energy in heat as you put in.

Once something is 100% energy efficient it is of course impossible to get more out of it as there is no waste to recover (which is why gas boilers are now more efficient - waste heat recovery).

It is an unfortunate fact of life that the "snake oil" heater companies use this lack of knowledge to rip off the unsuspecting customer.

Completely agree

The only variance with electric heaters is how they emit their heat and how that feels to the occupants of the room

ie halogen heaters heat the person rather than trying to heat the whole room so can seem more efficient to the person sitting in front of it

Arguably 3 500w heaters would be better spaced round a room tha one 1500W heater in the corner as it would reduce the cold spots more for instance

Anyway it still comes back to fact that insulation and elimination of drafts will make more difference than difference between buying a £10 or £1000 electric heater will
