One Christmas our daughter wanted a watch, so we let her.
Stuart, that sort of criminal activity may be acceptable for the Rednecks in your county, but for more civilised people, like those from Sussex, it is a complete no no.

I think you'll have to go a long way to beat a Seiko.....
Big range, excellent reputation for quality / reliability, good service from the importer in the unlikely event that you ever need it.

I must admit that Seiko are good...that's the one I had for 45 years. Never needed a new battery...it was automatic - lol. Mind you, it did gain about two minutes a week!
Take a look at nite watches, they have tritium tubes on the dial which means they glow in the dark and lasts 20 years plus. They have good resale values too if he gets bored of one. They have some superb limited editions at the moment too which I would love myself but can't justify another one.
I have two of the mx series, one for work and a dress one. Superb quality and great service from nite . British made and they will be able to sort the strap for you before its sent out. You just measure his wrist and they adjust it for you.
A tadge more expensive than a Seiko. Made me wonder what telling the time is all about now that I don't care very much, except it seems to go a lot faster than it did
