Looking for a bit of advice
We've had artificial Christmas trees for yrs. Usual excuse, dogs and carpets. I think I would like a real tree for a change - flooring in lounge now rather than carpet but we do have a pup. She wont have unsupervised access because she is a pup and a retriever at that!
Should I go for and real tree and if so which type would you recommend...or and I being hopelessly romantic and chaos will ensue?
We have a 6 year old Border Collie, a tree on the floor for us is a big NO NO, he never stops wagging his tail, so we have a smaller artificial tree on the sideboard.
Don't forget that pups have manic moments and could
demolish your tree in seconds, been there, never again
------------- Gaynor
I have three sides, left, right and wrong - which one are you on?
I have 3 border collies including a 9 month old pup and I will be having a real tree as I do every year. I normally go for a 4-5 foot Norman fir. They tend to have very little needle drop. I have a very wide sturdy base and I stand it on a low table so it's just out of reach of wagging tails. I also have it against a wall so it's not in the way when they come chasing in and out. None of mine ever bother with the tree. I just make sure I don't put anything edible on such as chocolate toys candy canes ect. And I have never had a problem
------------- Good cakes aren't cheap. Cheap cakes aren't good
We have always had real trees never been a problem, just get one whose needles don't drop, we bought a potted one last year and it survived and this year it is 1.5 ft bigger, so it will be coming indoors soon.
We did used to attach them somehow to the nearest fixed thing, window handle ceiling etc when the dogs, kittens were young.
In a my years since childhood we have never had a fake tree. That with toddlers and dogs. A real tree is an essential part of Christmas for us. Something more magical about it and the smell is wonderful.

We normally go for a Nordmann, cut off the first few inches and it goes into a stand that holds water which we top up. Doesn't drop but it's expensive - we'll be christening the B&Q over 60s discount card this year on Wednesday. Past dog and current cat OK with a real tree, yet to find out how the rescue cocker behaves - as it won't have a real bird in the tree, it should be safe enough (she's pegged two pigeons so far...) Up here, organisations like Scottish Natural Heritage will advertise the opportunity for members of the public to go onto some nature reserves and cut their own Scots Pine for free (or not a lot) - it help them get rid of trees that aren't wanted on bogs, and we find they've all got very individual shapes.
Ikea are doing them for £25 but you get a £20 voucher to send in January. (Handy if you shop in ikea)
Our dogs have waggy tails but we sort of of the tree in the corner so dogs can't get to it easily unless they jump on the sofa,

We always had a real tree, but we like to put it up as soon as we can in December and they just weren't lasting well (I'm a bit of a hothouse flower and need it warm), so just after christmas a couple of years ago we bought an artificial one...spent a lot of money on it and it looks real enough...it's not the same, but it still looks great on christmas day!
We've got a 12 week old puppy, so think it's going to be interesting this year!
We have always had artificial trees in the house, our lounge one being 7ft and had pups, grown dogs and children around with no real problems. Its just the practicalities of a real one. Saw some lovely Nordmans today...think I just need to convince husband and myself that it will work.
Husband doesn't really get Christmas and the decorations. He tolerates me decorating most rooms in house and outside too! Perhaps if I take him shopping for one he will get into the festive spirit...nah bah humbug!!
