Like most people I agree that windows 8.1 is far from user friendly compared to Xp, Windows 7 which were both easy to understand and navigate around.
That is just my opinion and many on this forum and other forums according to posts ,who like myself are not techies or computer experts which I think sometimes microsoft thinks the general public has become.
Change for the sake of it is not always a good thing but as we always say..each to their own

If you have the space for a PC desk & adjustable swivel chair then a PC is still the easiest & most user friendly way to use a computer. Any other method, laptop/tablet/smartphone gives you the convenience of mobility & so on but the actual experience is never going to be as good as a suitably located PC. Nothing will give you a better view of webpages than a modern large sized PC monitor.
I have a small PC desk and adjustable swivel chair but instead of a huge monitor and a big box of tricks humming away I have my laptop on it, wired up to the mains with extension speakers and mouse exactly the same as a PC but a lot less space... and portable if I need it to be. It has a 15.6" HD/LED screen so plenty big enough. A more modern laptop would be even better.
To set 8.1 to boot up straight to desktop...on the desktop screen, right click on taskbar at bottom of screen. Click Properties. Click navigation & tick box..'When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start'.
Its only one click to go between start screen & desktop anyway.
Windows 10 might be free but given the trouble I have recently had trying to download a couple of windows updates I am not sure I would risk trying to download a completely new system. I would certainly wait until most of the bugs have been sorted before attempting to do so.

Ok, but suppose you did not require it to be portable, what then? would you still advise buying a laptop over a PC? Bit like suggesting buying a folding bike when you are never going to need to fold it up.
Referring back to the OP's first post detailing the new user's requirements, a laptop or relatively mid-range desktop would do the job. A Dell refurbished - or a judiciously selected at a computer show - computer would almost certainly be the best bet. I got an excellent Dell D820 laptop with Win 7 Professional for £80 last summer at a computer show!
As to operating systems, having started with Win 3.11, IMO Vista was the worst - I have Win7 and Win XP on my computers (very happy with both!); my son had Win8 on his (new) laptop and was not overly impressed, but upgrading to Win8.1 was a considerable improvement, and he describes it as "satisfactory".
I have downloaded and installed Win10 preview, and so far (without major usage) found it to be as acceptable as Win7 - time will tell!

Well actually I bought it to replace my old desk top and use it exactly the same. I don't take it anywhere in case it gets damaged - lol. When I bought it, it was far more powerful and had tons more memory than my old desk top but it would be considered a bit slow now...so the answer is yes...why have a big box of tricks and a separate monitor when you can have a small box of tricks which does the same or better?
Would you still use a brick as your mobile phone when you can buy a much smaller and lighter one these days?

Your argument is spurious. At a fixed work station a PC is easier to use than a laptop, how can it not be? The keyboard is larger & so is the display. The monitor can be positioned at eye level & keyboard placed in a position convenient for user.
A portable device cannot fail to become less user friendly for internet access the smaller & more portable it becomes simply because of the small size of its display & controls.
If I was looking for a new pc I would give medion a look as the specifications of them are excellent for the price. Whereas a lot of manufacturers will use perhaps an intel i3, it may be a relatively slow one. Medion tend to have faster CPUs. There is a big difference between intel chips even though they may share the i3, i5, i7 names.
I have vista on this desktop but it runs great and even the sleep function works perfectly, so I rarely switch it off except for update installation.

You could be right.
A smaller lightweight model can only be thrown AT the window, whereas a desktop model, although heavier, can be thrown THROUGH the window.
I'd agree with earlier post re CCL Computers from Bradford area, but don't forget to add on the price of the OS. It's just an hours run across the Pennines to their shop at Drighlington.
------------- Some days you are the dog,
some days you are the tree.
We also have Dell laptops with the proper docking station from Dell.
24 inch monitor high definition again from Dell and a std size keyboard , the best of both worlds as when you travel just undock the laptop and carry all your info with you .
As in Rogers post above, so many people are dissatisfied with 8, Microsoft are considering giving away Microsoft 10, for free.
Tec savy people will find 8 ok but most people want something easy to follow and use.
Took me ages to get an older member of the family to use a computer and just as he mastered it the computer died so replacement bought, (windows 8)
He now wont even try, or even switch it on.
Finally go a tablet to take on me hols. Currys reduced price of 7" Galaxy Tab3 to £79 so I thought I'd go for it. I've been playing about with it this morning & while the size is idea for taking camping & so on it is so fiddly to use compared with PC. I just sit at my PC & bang stuff out out like now but doing that on a tablet is just tiresome. So the convenience is all in the portability not the usability.
