Isn't it a great sign of consumer confidence that a post about buying a new appliance descends into a post about extended warranties from the second post?
Washing machines are about the only appliances that do tend to go wrong after a few yrs & yes they do cover wear & tear, you will still get drum bearings replaced after 4yrs & if you are a heavy user they could well wear out. Arguing about rights under consumer law won't get your machine repaired in 2 days, even if you did win it would take months.
Obviously you do your homework, but £100 for extended warranty to give you machine for 5yrs is reasonable & needs to be viewed along with entire cost of machine. Imho it is not worth paying out for expensive machines with loads of programmes & the extra complexity of them is just something else to go wrong.
It isn't necessarily wise to purchase an extended warranty at the point of sale.
There are companies that provide warranties irrespective of where you purchased the appliance and in general are cheaper and provide better cover than the commission based ones sold in the major high street stores.
Another problem with a store based policy is that you don't normally have adequate time to read the small print which may include wear and tear exclusion clauses.

Yes this is why you need to do your research. The odd & perhaps unsual outcome in this case is that Curry's extended warranty offered at point of sale for washing machines, at least when I bought my last one about a yr ago & indeed 8yrs before that was the most competitive.
We have used AO when we have need kitchen appliances delivering to site. If we get involved its usually that they are needed "yesterday" and they havent let us down once.
------------- It'll work out in the end!!!!
I didn't do it !! Nobody saw me do it !! You can't prove anything !!

£100/year. Hmmm.
Lets put this into context. I've just paid £300 for an extended warranty on the car. (Still sulking mind you because it does not have 5/7 years warranty in the first place.) Notwithstanding that, the warranty covers most everything including the expensive entertainment system and such nasty stuff as DPF turbo and flywheel. It also includes full European road cover with "At Home" service.
Comparing the cost of a car to a washing machine and the amount that can go wrong, £100 for a one year old washing machine warranty seems extortionate.
Its not £100 / yr in fairness though is it - its £100 for the extra 4 years its giving you so I guess £25 per year if you want to break it down like that
Washing machines is also only one I consider getting the extended warranties with usually and no Dia they are not more reliable these days IMO, and nor is their life expectancy anywhere near what they were say 15 years ago.
They however are considerably cheaper as a proportion of monthly income than they were many years ago which maybe should tell you all you need to know about quality of components used?

The Starship Enterprise of washing machines....Sounds like a great machine..but am I really bothered if my clothes are treated to pre wash air bubbles! Does my underwear really need to be caressed by whatever etc..etc.
Most people I would imagine could get by on two programs, lightly soiled or really dirty! Which would cover everyday stuff and work clothes..or am I missing something!!! apart from the price

Yes, in white. It even plays a happy little tune when it is finished. Lasts about 15 seconds though I can see that getting annoying! I think you can silence it. The machine seems to be that price in a few places, including AO.

I personally don't get the point of extended warranties myself. Our current machine was very cheap at £170. Had it 3 years now and trouble free.
I would rather invest any spare money and take advantage of the power of compounding. I could easily have enough for another new machine over a 4 year period but more importantly that money could be used to make other money.. Even using that money to overpay the mortgage would save even more than the cost of a machine in interest.

If only spending £170 on a washing machine I would agree I wouldn't bother paying for an extended warranty either.
I would hope to get 5 years relatively trouble free out of it and buy a new one, not very "green" but that is what happens when cheap goods get made
Just look at printers for instance, these used to be a reasonably expensive purchase - not now
I think that was the point I have been making all along, buy the cheapest possible machine & an extended warranty & you definitely have a machine for 5yrs with no more to pay.
