I've been told the bands work; alternatively, find the acupressure point near your wrist and press it regularly http://www.naturalhealthmag.com/expert-advice/how-can-i-relieve-motion-sickness Don't go below decks, stay up in the fresh air (which may mean wearing a cosy hat & gloves & warm coat even in summer), keep your eyes on the horizon, avoid the smell of frying from the cafe as even an iron stomach can start churning then, keep upwind of the fumes from the funnel for the same reason, and finally distract yourself with bird watching (diving gannets, puffins, skuas etc - it's brilliant for birds) or chatting to people or strolling about. It'll be worth it to get to Shetland. Then, once you're OK on a ship, aim to do the Hurtigruten (Norwegian Coastal Voyage) which Angela recommends - a giant ferry that hugs the coast, the 12 day round trip was one of the absolute highlights of my life and I'd do it every year if I could.

My husband suffers from seasickness, and finds the bands quite good for just slight to moderate seas, but if things get really rough, like they did one Christmas around the canary islands, he takes the Boots own brand travel sickness pills and finds them very good.
The general advice on seasickness, issued by the cruise operators, is to stay midships and go to the lowest deck possible. This is to reduce the amount of rise and fall you would experiance with the swell of the sea if you were on the Bow of the ship, or to a lesser extent on the Stern.
The principle is very similar to a childs seesaw, the centre part stays firmly anchored, whilst the greatest rise and fall is at each end. Likewise, the higher the the centre fixed point of the seesaw, the greater the travel height at each end. This principle is why most ship's medical centres are situated on the lower decks at midships, not just for seasickness, but to give the medics more chance of a steady hand when carrying out proceedures at sea should the need arise.
