IMHO the problem lies with Doctors, Hospitals, Surgeries trying to squeeze too many appointments into to short a time period which naturally leads to overrun.

But if they booked fewer appointments for each session, waiting lists for appointments would increase and people would start complaining about how long they had to wait before they even got an appointment.

I'm with cbreddie on this, the NHS is fab and we're very lucky to have it. Most of its problems are due to lack of resources: not enough doctors, nurses or beds.

How many missed appointments are there because people can't be bothered to turn up. I think if you cancel on the day without good reason you should be charged a fee.

That should get shot of a few time wasters and free up some appointments for the genuine.

That's a good thing. Time wasters who do not turn up should have some sort of penalty. Of course, if there is a genuine reason, you can always ring to cancel.

I had an appointment on Wednesday for surgery to my hand, as it was snowing we set off in good time, appt time was 12.00 , at 11.20 the hospital phoned to ask if I could get there on time and could however was with me stay to make sure I could get home.

I was thinking great news they obviously want to get everyone done and finished early.... I went into theatre at 3.45!!!! Sat waiting, and some poor bloke was still waiting when we left at 4.30,.
It turned out that everyone that was to have day surgery was asked to turn up at 12 and then everyone just waits as they work their way down the list.

You will find that is always the case. Operating theatre time is very expensive and the theatre team is there whether the patient turns up or not. If they arranged it as a sequential list and the first three didn't turn up then that would be time and money lost. By getting everyone in then the list can be re-aranged.

Even if people turned in, sometimes surgery is cancelled on the day due to unforeseen circumstances - might even be down to the patient having a cat scratch or boil in the vicinity of the surgery site.

Sometimes lists are re-arranged due to anaesthetic problems with patients. A lot goes on behind the scenes that isn't seen. If you are last on the list it may be cancelled at the end of the day if the list is delayed by complications.

ficklejade, I am trying to figure whether your complaint is about you living on an isle and having to put up with a lot of inconvenience getting on and off the isle or the fact that the hospital staff didn't phone you to let you know that the appointment would be delayed.
I used to live in a very small village with all the added inconveniences that I moved nearer the town, I miss the village life but at least I'm in the midst of things now, swings and roundabouts as they say.
Hospital appointments.....has anyone ever been in on time? There are emergencies and things happen.
When you go for an appointment and they give you a list of things to bring in, add, paper pen puzzle MP3, sandwich and a bottle of water.

tristy, Primary issue: no apology to myself, other patients or hospital staff for late arrival in first instance and for the additional delay in second instance. A simple sorry, if the guy had a good reason he couldn’t communicate to us or the staff even if the reason given was a porkie, would have been polite. We all know the proverbial can hit the fan at any time! None of the patients were aggressive, though, as mentioned, some of us were tied to last transports and were getting anxious and the hospital staff were also concerned as they didn’t know what was going on – hence asking me (first patient out), if he’d said anything as to lateness or delay. For reason of the travel constraints mentioned above, even had the hospital known there was going to be a delay, to make the 1330 appointment, I had had to leave home at 0945.

The second reason is that the delay meant a second dose of eye drops (initial dose previously given in my case well before he arrived) hence leading to a longer time than normal for my eyes to adjust, with the subsequent knock-on consequences described.

Finally, I care for my Mum and if I have to go away for more than a couple of hours (and this was effectively a whole day), I need to get in extra help – which costs! OK, that’s an issue we as a family have to deal with and the hospital staff are very good with their patients, especially islanders, and do their damnedest to help out – hence I had first appt. I took the car on the basis that our buses in winter (especially in poor weather conditions as we had at the time) often don’t turn up and folks are often left stranded – a row that’s being dealt with elsewhere by the appropriate authorities – and had I been seen at the time when he did arrive, there would have been no issue about my driving back by the time the ferry trip and getting back to my car. It was that extra half hour that scuppered it.

Having puzzles, reading materials etc. is no use when you have eye drops in!

Totally agree David. Stop spending money on employing teams to work out how to save money.

Essentially that used to be my job about 12 years ago.
It drove me mad the fact that we achieved absolutely nothing, and cost an awful lot of money.

So I left the civil service, and I now work on the front line for the NHS.
I still have many issues with my job, but at least I feel that I am helping rather than hindering the system now!

I would give anything to even get near my local hospital: the consultant wants to see me but repeated requests to my GP to refer me to her again are falling on deaf ears. She wants to do up to date scans on my right leg but protocol dictates that as it's more than 6 months since she last saw me I need another referral.

That's awful. Could you ask another GP at the practice?

My GP referred me to a rheumatologist at the start of Jan. I got quite excited when I got an NHS letter this morning, thinking it would be my appointment details.

After reading it 3 times, it seems to be telling me, in a very convoluted way, that no-one gets an appt until a consultant has read the referral and agreed that it's necessary to see the patient. This will take at least 2 weeks.

This leads me to wonder what happens if the consultant decides I don't need to see him. My GP is mystified by my joint problems, that's why he's referred me!
