We started geocaching about 4 or 5 months ago. We live near a country Park where there are 17 caches. We haven't done a lot since Christmas because other things have taken over our time but we'll be starting again soon. It's a perfect, cheap, hobby for nomads!
On the subject of GPS, we bought a Satmap off eBay for £100. Unfortunately you can't download from the geocaching web site, they seem to favour Garmin which we dismissed for some reason, so I just print out the co-ords, description and clues.
To be honest a phone or a car sat nav in 'walking mode' would be enough. The device used to place the geocache are usually garmins or the like, only good to a 5m radius. A car sat nav is about the same. A phone is slightly worse.
I am a Topographic Surveyor with a piece of kit called Leica Smartnet, a receiver dish on top of a pole with a data logger. I could find a cache to half a centimeter but when the device used to place the thing is pretty hairy there's no point in having that kind of resolution.
However I'd be damn good at placing the things but I've never got round to it. I'm more of a part timer with Geocaching as it is.

We love camping and caching. I have Facebook group called Geocamping UK which geocachers / campers chat on.
Its a great way to get outdoors and explore the area.
