Having waited all of my teenage and adult life I have finally got my first puppy. He is a border collie named Tiree. I got him last Wednesday. Some of you may recall that a few years ago my OH and I found a border collie wandering down the main road. We adopted her, Isla, she is getting on great with the pup. I am hoping to do obedience with him or maybe fly ball or agility, depends how fit I feel.
He has already learnt sit and lay down. House training going okay.

Struggling to upload so will try again later.

Thats great, we have a Border Terrier but our last dog was a Border Collie.
You will already know they need lots fo walking and how intelligent and faithful the breed is. Enjoy

Aha, someone who thinks as we do. We already have a Mull and a Coll. (see gallery).
As there are over 300 other named Scottish Islands, we have a way to go yet!!!!

They are sweet. Looked at loads of the islands before we decided on Tiree. It would have been Arran but a friend's grandchild has that name. Now we need to visit both Islay and Tiree.

Congratulations. I have 3 border collies who I do agility with. They can be hard work but are such amazing dogs. If you are looking to do dog sports I would recommend some puppy classes as soon as he's finished his innoculations. Follow up with obedience classes. At 6 months they can start agility foundation classes then can start training properly at a year

Miss baritone thanks for that information, I thought they had to be a year before starting. A lady who lives close by has four dogs who do agility, I will speak to her about where they train.

I think Island names suit dogs...Had a friend who named his visla's Rhona and Isla.....Suited them anyway....Not too sure About Muck as a name....though it could suit some....

Have a great time with the pup Kiya....and remember basic training begins NOW.....Not in 6months time...

There is an agility training club close to where you live. My apologies if I' m telling you something you already know. It's at the City Farm just outside West Calder, got their own course permanently laid out and looks quite good. Not into the agility thing, trying to get mine to calm down rather than be more active but have been up at the City Farm buying dog food.
For basic dog traing I would recommend Karens Dogs, if you google it she has her website with details. Numbers attending limited and Karen is really good, also based over near West Calder. I've heard not so good reports about the training classes in Lanark but have never been so can't give any personal comment.
I'm just outside sunny Forth so might see you out walking with the dogs at some point. I'm usually walking around the Forestry Commission ground by the old ironworks, really good for dogs . Have you tried there?

Yes they have to be a year before they can actually jump but foundation classes help teach a lot of basics to prepare for when they are old enough to jump. Agility is a great sport. It's not the physical exercise but it tires them mentally as they have to learn to think and work. Mine are always flat out all afternoon after a class. That's where most people go wrong with collies. They try to tire them physically which is impossible. You have to get them using their brains to tire them mentally. There is a saying if you don't give a border collie a job it will find its own and it will be one you won't like. It's very true.
