I think there are plenty of examples of people in all sorts of professions that are willing to bleed themselves dry through overwork. Whether this is done through incompetence in the job or keenness to progress to higher positions is difficult to know.Perhaps you should read the school teacher pay and conditions document pages 47 to 48 to see what the working days and working time requirements are for the role. However, teaching is a vocation and not a role you can truly switch off from.
Don't know whether this is addressed at me or not, but there are other reasons for the hours one has to put in. In my case it was a wholly incompetent boss who left a trail of disaster in her wake, and also managed to destroy another authority before being sacked. Sadly she was well supported by the local politicians who realised the problem far too late.
As for the pay and conditions document, I know it well, and anyone who thinks teachers have only to work 1265 hours a year are sadly misformed. Note the following paragraph:
In addition to the hours a teacher is required to be available for work under paragraph 52.21 or 52.22, a teacher must work such reasonable additional hours as may be necessary to enable the effective discharge of the teacher’s professional duties, including in particular planning and preparing courses and lessons; and assessing, monitoring, recording and reporting on the learning needs, progress and achievements of assigned pupils.
From a recent government report:
On average, all school teachers report working over 50 hours per week, with primary and secondary school headteachers reporting more than 60 hours.

No not aimed at you. The document was for the OP so that they could see the conditions on working time.
No one was saying that teachers only work 1265 hours. However, there is protection in their contract to make sure that they do not have to work an unreasonable numbers of hours.
