Forgive me if I have this wrong but wasn't mass appeal the object of the programme?
It wasn't like it was all about artistic content.
It often works out that the more popular a programme is the more moronic it is. Just look at big brother, I'm a celebrity etc.
I thought the BBC receiving funds from licence payers wouldn't be under as much pressure to please advertisers by lowering the bar as much.

There's a question I've asked several times, and never had an answer yet:
"Is there a level of behaviour from JC which even TG fans would find unacceptable?"
In the absence of an answer, I can only assume there isn't one. Certainly, physical violence doesn't seem to be have reached it. As for the deniers...
a) He turned himself in. The producer didn't dob him in.
b) After an investigation, the BBC published a report saying it happened. I see no objection from The Bully.
c) When James May rather sweetly referred to a fracas, did we think that was JC saying:
"I say old chap, what a shame the kitchen has closed for the night, but as we threw the schedule out completely by stopping and boozing somewhere else for 2 hours, I completely understand. and clearly, it's my own fault. Not to worry. Give us a bag of cheese n onion."
Because, that's what happened, right?
As to the future of the licence fee, I think it's doomed, for all sorts of reasons. In the meantime, the BBC spends nearly £5B producing award winning content across TV, radio, and online. And because the contract for one presenter on one show has not been renewed it's all worthless. Wow.
The solution is easy. If you only ever watch ‘on demand’ programmes, you don’t need a TV Licence. On demand includes catch-up TV, streaming or downloading programmes after they've been shown on live TV, or programmes available online before being shown on TV. ‘Live TV’ means any programme you watch or record at the same time as it’s being shown on TV or an online TV service.
The equipment used or the method of delivery is no longer relevant.
When don’t I need a TV Licence?

If they don't have a revenue source, how are they to fund the commissioning of programmes that you can then view by streaming etc.?
We will be left with American imports.
( I am too old to need to pay for a licence anyway!)

Presumably there's only two options - or a combination:
Adverts
Subscription
Adverts I would see as the worst option. But I have an attention span longer than 15 minutes. Subscriptions I'm used to with Amazon Video and Netflix, so wouldn't object to a reasonable amount to watch HD stuff advert free. How it would work, or could work, I've no idea, unless it was delivered over the internet like Netflix.
One of the reasons I think the licence is doomed is precisely because streaming on demand/after-the-event content is used by many, particularly the younger ones, and doesn't need a licence. So those who do pay it are subsidising them. And not forgetting that via geo workarounds, iPlayer is available anywhere in the world. Free.
The licence fee goes back to the time when licences were needed for all sorts of things no longer requiring one. And before other channels came along, and before the internet came along. Time for a change.

Wholeheartedly agree with the above posts about JC and the wider question of the licence fee.
It would seem that they don't think JC should be subject to the laws of the land (or to have any control of his temper). He's JC so apparently, he can do as he wants and the BBC should always forgive him.
Still think there is more to it than meets the eye though...think about it - tired programme running out of steam, so he causes this "incident" to happen = lots of publicity, people signing petitions etc. etc....then he gets to choose who he works for, walks away from TG already a rich man about to become even richer, no longer tied by the restraints of working for the BBC. He's no fool, I'll give him that. Arrogant, opinionated bully yes, but not stupid.

I find it rather sad to see that the BBC chappy that 'had' to terminate JC's contract has now received death threats and has had to employ some minders.
Lets not forget that JC brought all this on himself.
People should grow up!

I think JC will be back with Top Gear and on BBC. They have already said that they cannot rule out a return in the future. My guess is that they have to be shown to be doing something and then when it has all died down, they will sort out their differences.
Unfortunately, money talks and Top Gear is a lot of money for the BBC.

Yentob has hinted as much.
Where there's ratings and commercial considerations at stake, anything can be excused.
Apparently.

According to the Guardian the resigning producer went to school with Clarkson and is presumably a mate. On leaving he is reported to have assured the team that the programme would continue.
He allegedly said also they made “television that was beautiful to look at and beautiful to listen to”. I thought they just made TV that was a bit of a larf.

In the great spectrum of things, such as the unrest in the Middle East, famine, ebola and my wife's discovering dust on the piano, the TG saga is all a bit unimportant.
