We have moved house since, so have not got around to installing it here as yet, but it's work in progress.

Handy that you can view from your phone etc, with the Swan like most I guess there are lots of settings, you can define motion start within the frame, so that it only kicks in around the car etc.

Most of the idiots will know that you have got the real deal, especialy at night as there is a visible ring around the camera from the night vision LED's.

That's usually enough to make them move on to there next target.

We have this too. Currently 3 out of 4 cams are fitted and working. Ours runs 24/7 and footage has already been taken by police regarding a neighbourhood burglary. Hubby Has the Swann app On iPad meaning he can stream footage anywhere so when we get a motion detection email alert from one camera he can have a look from all 3 cameras to see precisely what it is. It is colour by day and black & white at night.

We got ours due to a gang operating in our area trying our car doors on drive hoping to get items left inside & every week or so we would wake to our gate open. Remember to fit a night illuminate paint notice at entrance to your property to alert would be criminals to the fact you have cctv as since we have done this our gates have remained closed (touch wood)!

We got ours on offer at Costco.

Hi Fiona, finally got our 4 camera system installed in our new house, well new to us as it was built in 1898!.

We moved in to this house back in July 2013, can't believe it as taken almost 2 years to get around to fitting the cameras.

The house is an old stone end of terrace, so fitting the cables meant, going upto almost 30ft on the ladders, in order to route the cables through the loft, not helped by the fact that I had to use a 600mm x 10mm SDS drill bit, to get throught the 18" walls, on the last house a 310mm SDS was as long as I ever needed.

Cameras are all much lower, say 12ft of the ground, images are great for what is a 4 year old system, cameras are just 480 line analog, so no HDMI, but the system works fine and we can monitor via swan-view from our various devices.

Will upgrade to a HD system in a year or two, but it is great for now, the hardest part has been getting the cables in place, and we have also added audio, at least all the hard work has now been done ready for upgrade in the future.

I have spent most of the last couple of days up quite a high ladder, although I did use safety rings fastened to the Gable end wall, at the highest points, which the top of the ladder was lashed to, better safe than sorry.

Best thing is a few strategically positioned Claymore AP devices, and an IR detector-activated minigun.....

Yep, Gram and a lot easier to install, than the system I have put in this last couple of days.

Saving up now for the Swann NVR4-7200 just another 4 camera system, but with 1080p HD, which is the Dog's B#**#**k's of home CCTV systems, not cheap though at around £800!

Take a look at

www.systemq.com create a log in for prices. The quality is far in excess of swann and professional stuff. The staff are helpful too.

The nite devil range is superb.

Thanks Lockie, looks interesting, will compare pricing with Swann, I would imagine all this kind of stuff comes from the same factories in China, it just depends how far up the range you want to go.

The website says Trade only, but that's not a problem, easy one to get round is that one.

Just bumping an old thread as some neighbours this week, have been having 'issues'....

Some cars in our streets have been - according to the local police, 'interfered with'...

I tried registering with system Q to see what they offer, but they wouldn't have it.

So just wondering, anything changed in the CCTV world?

I've 're-looked at' the Costco system again and may just go for that...

Questions/factors -
Do you need/want to monitor a wide field/area?
If NOT, you do not need a "pan" (or pan/tilt/zoom) camera.
Is the area illuminated?
If NOT, you do not need a camera with infra-red/night vision capability.
If not in both cases, a simple webcam (preferably HD/720p), together with Yawcam and a switched-on computer will suffice.
If a wide field/area needs to be covered, a "pan" (or pan/tilt/zoom) camera - look for PTR IP (internet protocol) camera, such as Foscam - again with Yawcam or iSpy - will be more suitable.
If infra-red/night vision is required, again, look for PTR IP (internet protocol) camera - but IR will not work through a (glass) window - reflection!
Both Yawcam and iSpy have motion detection and recording facilities; I have used both with satisfactory results for low costs. I would point out that many of the cheaper IP cameras are not specifically designed/built for external use, but they may be OK if properly shielded from the weather...
All this provides a cheap but effective solution - but ONLY if the above conditions apply...

Update on my post is that (touch wood) since installing our cctv, and putting 2 night illuminated cctv signs up on the gate, we haven't had anyone on our drive since! Amazing, I used to look out of the front bedroom window each night several times now I don't bother at all, it's nice to not worry, especially when hubby away on business!

I have a Trendnet IP camera.. cost about £100 on Amazon. I have a QNAP NAS with 3TB WD Purple Drives (made for surveillance). Both the camera comes with software which can record onto a networked drive, or the QNAP NAS has its own surveillance software which I personally prefer.

We have had "issues", car damage and "knock and runs",
would like a camera but there is no pavement outside our house, the front door opens onto the street.
I was told that you can only record/view images from your own property, and you can't record anyone in the street? Is this true?

With some extremely discreet pinhole cameras about no one will know.

One of ours films the street outside and my previously vocal neighbour asked I had recorded something that would help them out.

Funny when it helps them suddenly there isn't a problem.

Sure you are not supposed to but I informed all my neighbours before and only one was vocal so I showed her it masked off and she was happy. Because of the mask I didn't record what she wanted help on, oh the irony.
Now she says she doesn't mind if it captures some of her property.

I think she thought I would be sitting in all day looking at it but I rarely check it. Used it two weeks prior after a so called attempted delivery where they didn't actually bother and I could prove it. Useful in many ways I didn't think of

There is no law against filming/photographing in a public place.

I had a wireless cctv installed by calgary alarms. I would recommend wireless because it is easier to set up and can be installed in some places where it would be impossible for the wired systems to get installed. You may also need to check the length of the contract Some may require a long-term commitment with the incentive of cheaper upfront cost for equipment while others may operate on a month to month basis. So be careful when you sign the contracts. Here is an article that tells you in detail what you need to know before installing a cctv camera(http://www.calgaryalarm.com/blog/cctv-camera/what-you-need-to-know-before-installi........).
