Now that the A9 cameras have been working for some time what is the general opinion about the road?
Are trips up and down it quicker / safer / easier to overtake?
Any other observations?

We drove up to Blair Atholl on Friday then back down again yesterday. The average speed cameras seem to be doing a good job. We didn't encounter any delays both there and back and didn't witness any numptys trying to overtake unless it was on the dual carriageway part of the road.

Cars on the whole were observing the 60mph speed limit. You can't fool the average speed cameras so for me that can only be a good thing

Been up and down quite a few times Inverness to Perth and overall it's better.
The traffic flows more easily especially now that the trucks are allowed to do 50mph. Only downside to that is when someone (or two) sits behind a truck and causes a tailback because they're to frightened to pass.
The clue about the cameras is AVERAGE SPEED!, so if you follow a truck for a while at 50, you could still overtake even though you may exceed 60 to do so.

its a long boring road at 5am on a sunday morning stuck at 60mph.

We went up to Aviemore using the A9 2 weeks ago and generally the traffic flowed well.
There were a few tailbacks at times behind trucks and some tractors.

Its the usual wacky races when you get to a dual carriageway though with everyone from the tailback wanting past the slow movers.

Still a few nutters mind you who think that 60mph actually means 70+mph but you get that everywhere.

That road needs to be duel carrage all the way, or at least let vans, trucks and caravans get up to 60
(if its safe to do 60 on a motorway, its safe to do 60 anywhere?)

I've driven up as far as Perth where it's all dual carriageway. I find the journey a dream now, no one racing by you at 90mph, I find many people sit around 67-68mph and it means I can overtake at 70. I agree the single carriageway after Perth is awful but it will all be duelled in time, there is a timetable for it. I've had someone pull out from a side road assuming it was a dual carriageway and I'd just move over, it's scary.

I agree, the 70mph limit is being very well observed. If im travelling it i set my cruise control to around 68mph and that gives scope for speeding up slightly to overtake

The important thing is that HGVs are not limited to 10mph less than cars, for a trial period. People got very frustrated in the past but the HGV drivers were only sticking to their legal limit. I wonder if the raised HGV limit has as much to contribute to the smoother flow of traffic than the average speed cameras. As for the calls for dualling, it costs money.... lots of money, which means less money for something else we need. But a consortium of firms is currently working on proposals, look at http://www.transportscotland.gov.uk/project/a9-dualling-perth-inverness

Mentioned this in conversation with friend who uses A9 between Perth and Inverness about every fortnight. Her description was very much the same as Vangoman's above. Raising the trucks' limit has been a big help in improving the traffic flow - as Fiona said, the former lower limit on trucks caused untold frustration which led to stupid overtaking manoeuvres. My tactics whenever I travel the A9 are anticipate a slow haul and keep out of trouble. If I can avoid it, I will!

Did anyone read about the driver who removed his number plates and then drove up the A9 at speed. When he was stopped by the police he said he did it because he was running late. I am sure it was in The Stirling Observer.
