Hi,
My little Corsa 1.0L is beyond economical repair. It still runs but requires a cam chain replacement and at almost 115k i just cant justify it....especially as i found metal fragments in the last oil change (could be from the rattly cam chain but who knows).

Any way this has given me the perfect opportunity (and excuse) to start looking for a new car. I had my heart set on a Vauxhall Astra diesel estate but after some reviews i'm not sure...its nickname disAstra doesn't inspire confidence!

Fuel Type: Diesel
Engine size: 1.7 or there abouts
Economical not so bothered about speed.

Any recommendations? Ive seen an Astra estate 07 plate 110000k for 1500.

For that price it doesn't matter what badge is on the rear of the car - you buy the best you can find for the money and that will mean trawling the small ads.

It has always been the case that the cheapest car is the one you already own. Your old car may need repairs, but the gamble with a £2k car with 115,000 on the clock is that it will also need major repairs in the near future - especially so with a diesel which has some very expensive components under the bonnet - fuel pumps, injectors, turbo, EGR valve etc etc.

If you are not bothered about speed then Citroen Berlingo with the old type 1.9 diesel, last cars with this engine were around 2005 so well within you budget. Based on the old xud diesel so good for over 200k miles. Just ensure cambelt has been changed.

We had 2 Astra estates at the same time, and loved them. One was petrol, the other diesel. The reason I chose mine was because the back was completely flat, so things didn't need to be lifted over a lip. It went camping in France several times, and we did sleep in it sometimes too.
We replaced the Astra with a VW Touran, which was also fab, and flat, but taller. That also went camping in France a lot. We finally traded it in for a VW transporter campervan.

What about a BMW tourer. We have a 04 Saloon version of the 2L diesal and the miles per gallon is brilliant. Which is making it difficult for us to find a replacement petrol.

Has to be petrol because we don't do the journeys we used to.

if you want the astra estate get the one with a izusi engine in
ive had an astra hatch for 4 years now bought it with 66 k on clock and its just rolled over to 136k

only problem ive ever had with it was the ECU cost me 60 quid

other than that its ran like a dream and kicks the living crap out of my OH brand new eco tech astra (which aint as eco as it make out)

also been told to replace mine with a focus estate from 55 to 59 plate (cant remember the type of engine)

but again good runners and cheap parts (i only pay parts not fitting)

If I were spending £2k on a car it wouldn't be a diesel, for that kind of money they will be high mileage and potentially expensive money pits.

I would be looking at a petrol Focus, mondeo or Astra.

I'm with you on that one, Frog. My Mondeo tDci was a nightmare: had to have the DMF and the injectors done, then decided I was throwing good money after bad. There were 2 other really expensive things on the way out (can't remember what they were now).

Petrol estates are harder to find though. I hear nothing but good about the Focus 1.6 Zetec.

Also with that kind of money you really want to be buying privately rather than a dealer.

I had a Rover 75 estate a few years back, great car plenty of room high spec with TV in it, Cost me 3k around 6 years ago and had a BMW 2ltr deisel engine returned 60 mph on motorway. Might be roof looking at as plenty still around and parts are still available, as it was based on the series 5 BMW chassis.

if you have £2000 i would look hard.you can find a good car for that.But there is lots of crap,so take someone who knows.Personelly i would avoid vauxhall.Go jap they are reliable

If i was spending that sort of money i would look at either a higher mileage diesel that has had its clutch/DMF replaced or an older one with less mileage.
I am a Mondeo fan personally and have owned five back to back ( still shuddering at the the Renault that creaped in at one point!), but the Passat, Volvo and Japanese market are all worth looking at.

Volvo V70? We've had ours for years and never had a problem. It returns excellent MPG and has a huge luggage space. I'd like something newer but we're not sure what to buy and it's always a worry, trading in an old reliable for a newer unknown.

Ours has just had a major service, new timing belt and water pump, new brakes all round, tyres etc. The bill was a bit frightening - probably around what it's now worth - but now we know it's ready for the next 100K!

Yep we are on our second V70, both petrol and auto's can be a bit juicy on town driving, but we got 30mph in France this year.

Our old Vreg had a better turning circle than our newer 04 model.

But loads of room for stuff.

The consumers association (Which? Magazine) car survey is just out. Top estate is Skoda, then VW golf, then another Skoda, 4th is BMW 3 series but that won't be in budget, 5th is yet another Skoda model. Bottom comes Peugot 307 and 207 with three Vauxhalls.
