Not that I want to go there but just as a matter of interest I thought I would check on the 'Camp Site Search' facility to see how many campsites were located on the I.O.M. that accept touring caravans, provide electric hook up and accept dogs on site. Apparently there is just one campsite listed with 17 reviews which are, 1 campervan and 16 tents but none at all with a touring caravan.
I wonder if it's the cost of the ferry crossing that makes it too expensive to visit the I.O.M. or could there be another logical reason?

Thanks Bob, that without doubt solves the mystery of the lack of touring caravans but I would have thought that as the I.O.M. rely much on tourism that it would have been extra revenue to accept caravans. However, it could be something to do with the travelling community regarding making an application as they have no fixed abode. Maybe a good policy after all.

Hi Tango,

As a resident of the said Island I may be able to clear some things up. there has always been a need to obtain a permit to bring a caravan over however over the last ten years it has been quite a relaxed arrangement with the result that the number of residents owning caravans had grown quite significantly and as there is nowhere to store them they were being "stored" quite haphazardly at local beauty spots causing an eyesore. Add to that start of an influx of some travelling caravans the Government decided this year to tighten up the rules to try to prevent unofficial sites springing up all over the place.
Folding campers and folding caravans and campervans can however be brought over on the ferry without restrictions and we do have some lovely campsites over here.

Thanks for the explanation 'me123' as that does put things into perspective.
However, I have been to the I.O.M back in 1975 as a teenager on my 250 cc. motor cycle with a friend to watch the TT races whereby we stayed at a campsite somewhere near to Douglas in a 2 man tent.
We managed to see the Ferris Wheel at Laxey whilst there but never got to see Peel Castle or any other places of interest and just thought it would be a good place to go on holiday in the future. That's what prompted me just to have a look at what the pitch prices were which lead me to posting this thread.
