I backpacked from an early age with my older brother. I also started boxing training from 12 years old. Which involved gym/ring and road work.
I used to jog to training with a weighted backpack and considered myself fitter that the average guy.

Was jogging to training one day and collapsed in a heap as my leg had just went dead..no feeling whatsoever.
It stayed like that for an hour or so and gradually feeling came back and I was able to walk. Albeit I was in hospital by this time.

It turned out to be the cartilage in my left knee had popped out and then went back in again.
Ended up with an op to remove the cartilage and a fair bit of exercising post op to build up muscle where the cartilage was..bone to bone as someone has said.

I was 27 years old at the time and recovered quickly but even today 36 years later, it still gives twinges of pain and if I turn quick I feel as if my knee will lock?
I continued to backpack into my early 50's but had to give up the boxing training at about 40 yrs old as it was too intense and my knee was giving me gype.

Anyway my ramble is to support those that say some kinds of exercise can wear things out quicker and much more difficult to recover the older you are!

Those adult scooters are becoming quite popular, especially with lady commuters on the train.
Unfortunately they also use them as shin weapons on Waterloo station

I used to run,as we had fitness tests when I was in the RAF.
It did my knee in, so doc recommended rowing, cyclng or swimming.
These days happy to do plenty of walking in the fresh air!

They were advertising running kit in Aldi a couple of weeks ago,or there is Go Outdoors which seem to have offers frequently.
We got some good walking boots there.

Manual workers doing hard physical work all their lives usually end up with joint & back problems & plenty of professional athletes die prematurely. Others have become millionaires from the fitness 'industry', look at Duncan Bannatyne, so rich he did not even notice his accountant had nicked £8mill out of the till...

Just eat less cake & get out there & walk, it works for me & I never spend more than £35 on a pair of trainers...

Can you send me the link to the evidence that says running is bad for your joints? It's complete rubbish and the benefits to your heart and body far outweigh the chances of injury.

OP.. Are you on Facebook.. If so I would search for a group called BOSH run, it's a really friendly and helpful bunch of people.

I would aways say the best running shoes are those that suit you, so what's good for others isn't always the best for you. Try a local running shop, many will offer a guarantee if the shoes don't turn out to be what you expected

All you need to do is type " running related injuries" you should find loads of info. Which will answer your question.

Training to much without appropriate rest, intensity, too much to soon, rtraining with pain and not stopping, repetition, training on tarmac and uneven surface. Soft tissue damage, ankle and knee injuries, fractures, over 50% of runner will suffer injuries.

Then biomechanics and footwear.

It's not just those doing hard physical work that end up with joint and back problems. Anyone who has a bad posture, muscle imbalance, abnormal gait, lifts and handles items incorrectly or is just carrying too much weight etc. is likely to get joint, muscle and back problems.

When I first started running as an exercise my problems were caused by muscle imbalance. I have seen physiotherapists on several occasions and gone through exercise routines to build up supplementary muscles.

The most important of these, for me, was one to stop my knees toeing in. This took the form of sanding on one leg and bending the knee to do a flamingo type squat. This built up additional muscle around my knee and completely solved knee and hip pain.

Also very important to get a good pair of running shoes, suitable for your gait and replace them when they go flat, that's after about 500 miles. I'm currently doing over 30 miles a week and not suffering any injuries.

Billy, I get your point about walking, but it just doesn't get anywhere near the enjoyment that I get through running. Do they do competitive walking races?

Bobcat, Shin splints tend to be temporary and you should be able to get past them with care and good shoes.

For those thinking of starting running see if there is a Park Run near you. It's a 5km run every Saturday morning at 9am. They are free to attend and you can start off really slowly and build up your jogging/running time over as many weeks as it takes. They are organised for people to have fun.

Superbird - I am not in danger of harming other commuters, I go from the village into dense woodland along the Aire Valley, then up the other side of the valley into the office. It is quite rural around here. From my office window I can see Baildon Moor and across to Ilkley Moor

Lucky me. I know I am fortunate in location, but I did my stint in London and know how congested and busy it can be.

I recall competitive walking races yrs ago Ollie & walking as fast as possible without actually running was more tiring than actually running. I agree that for some exercise has to be 'fun' or they may find it more fun just to watch their many sport channels on their 60inch tv screens.

Mostly though keeping fit is more about one's whole lifestyle rather than fitting in the lastest exercise regime between eating all the wrong food & going to the pub. Its suprising how many people think going to the gym or running a few miles in expensive trainers can 'compensate' for an otherwise unhealthy lifestyle.

I agree, you have to have a 'holistic' approach. Eat well by this I mean eat for fuel and no more. The expression all the gear and no idea springs to mind.

I love exercise, it gives me a buzz. I sleep better, feel better and certainly look better.

I personally would never buy running shoes that I haven't been fitted by an experienced person who has analysed my gait on a treadmill. If I'm spending the kind of money running shoes cost these days, I want to be certain they are right. My current running shoes are Saucony and I've not been entirely happy with them. The laces are either too tight or too loose with no happy medium and the tongue on one foot seems to bunch up in an uncomfortable way.

On the subject of running and joint problems etc... I run to burn off the crazy. It protects my husband's health because otherwise I'd lose it and strangle him.

I have had Saucony for the last few years, and i was fitted for my first pair. So I like Saucony as a brand...I also buy boys because I do NOT like girlie colours for sport.

Hopefully I have found an all round work out sport to pursue. I pick up my 'kick scooter' on Saturday and if I keep my side of the bargain and put as much effort into it as I do running and cycling I should soon see the benefits.
Once again DECATHLON have come up trumps (check out the Oxey Town 9), they have their own brand of scooters.

The French and Italians are really 'cool' about them, but for some reason it is seens as a bit geeky and in a category with recumbants..I aim to dispel that myth and make it a 'hip' mode of transport. I don't look geeky and will gear up for it    Oliver - THe impact injury ratio is really low..but it depends on the person doing it really. For sure I will not be going on the road with it , so that 50% reduction in risk of injury.

I started doing parkruns in the early summer and 3 weeks ago did my first 10k (solo in New york :D ) . Picking up some info from those at the parkrun and also stateside (especially for those on just getting into it like myself)

Karrimor do a good range of running/trial shoes with prices less than £40

The big brand coming out of the US at the moment .... Sketchers !!!! Yep. There go run range are really good and are likley to hit BIG next summer in the UK.

Sports direct have some decent waterproof running jackets and you can pick up a decent headtorch off ebay for under £3

Mike, I bought Trail shoes, and they are not a patch on my Suacony's, but they were a third of the price. There is no arch support, very little cushioning in the heel, so no 'spring' when you run. They make my ankles ache, so I am going to use them for walking and scooting to work instead, and put it down to experience. We have a superb running shop called 'The Complete Runner', so I will be patronising them rather than buying from Sports Direct in future. Clothing is one thing but the wrong shoes can cause damage.

I did my first commute on my kick scooter this morning....goodness it's hard work, so this can only be of longer term benefit. Its breeze on the flat and down hill, but inclines are felt immediately. I rode up Apperley Bridge...well I alternated scooting and walking. Amazing buzz, I feel alive!
