I always believed it was sensible to teach one's kids the basics about cooking and to date, that principle has served well. Nor do I object to food for free and DS has been making jams etc. as a result of which we have come unstuck over cranberry sauce and cranberry jelly. He wants jelly in the sausage roll mix and I usually use cold fairly coarse sauce so you get a bit of the fruit with it. DS has scoffed the latter for years (and I do mean scoffed!) but wants the jelly. Rather than argue, I've said he can make some with jelly, but I'll make some the old way. He will have to go out and get some more sausagemeat (or sausages as the former's in very short supply this year over here) and I still have to make the plain ones and the apricot and lemon ones. We then got into a debate as to why I wanted non-French onions (stronger flavour) and a few other items like larding and so on. Worse, the sprouts argument came up - we'll close a curtain on that one - but he baulked at hauling out some leeks for Christmas dinner! I'm stressing out to get things ready! The only thing we're agreeing on at the moment is cooking the gammon!
Do I let him take over?

Well, I'm learning something today - apricot and lemon sausage rolls, is that? Maybe you should take turns - he is in charge one year, and gets to call the shots, and you the next. Sounds as if it's going to be tasty, anyway!

Hedgehugger - the apricot and lemon was the result of an absolute lapse of memory on my part; I needed extra sausage rolls - unexpected visitors - and opened apricot puree. Decided WTF and they just went down so fast was embarrassed - everyone wanted the recipe!!! Been making them for a few years now.
TBH, he's much better a cook of straight seafood than I, so always let him do them and also steaks. We have agreed that he can do the turkey this year and to be fair, he's asking advice (our oven a bit temperamental!), but I'm in charge of veg and brandy sauce!!

Wow - necessity is the mother of invention, indeed! Good one. It's great that your son can cook - I used to work with a man who had never bothered to learn, and it wound me up when he flapped his hands about and claimed airily that he couldn't boil an egg.

I know how you feel . I have two sons . Both early thirties sadly no girl friends at the moment . But they are coming for Christmas dinner and both tell me how to cook and what to use etc. It's driving me mad .
Both of them cook very well but now have their own ideas. I am waiting for them to get girl friends ( if any will have them ) so I can just sit back and let them do their own thing .
Let him take over. He probably loves to cook and he wants to please you all by preparing some of the food his way. My son has turned out to be a really good cook. He does some things differently from me but I just sit back and enjoy what he prepares. Certainly not worth arguing about.
Too many cooks and all that....................
Have a great day whatever is in the sausage rolls.
So glad I am my own (by choice) for Christmas - the pets do not argue with me, and they are grateful for their share of the Crimbo lunch (there will be extra pigs in blankets especially for them).
