your insurance.
ok so your car insurance claims to supply you with a replacement car while your car is in for repair.
sounds ok dosent it.
but did you know that some insurances Will provide a car while your car is being repaired BUT will NOT provide you with a car if your car is write off.
my friends car was wrote off on the 11th november
The insurance has still not paid out or provided a car untill it does.
can you tell where this is leading to, yes your right, another job for the legal profesion.
So when that seagull s**ts on you (tv add) it realy does s**t on you.

That is common with several companies, one of the reasons for always reading the policy when you renew your insurance.

A lot of things which used to be included are now 'charged' extras.
Just another way the insurance can take another few quid from your pocket.....

In the case of a right off, most companies will provide a car for up to 3 weeks, look a the small print s the name of the game.

If you do not take the guaranteed hire car option then yes you only get a car if yours is being repaired.

Thats the policy i have, if my cars that bad its going to be written off i will go and buy another one.

If that does not meet your needs then you need to add on the guaranteed car option.

Not exactly a ripoff. Bit like saying i only bought 3rd party cover because its cheaper and my insurance will not fix my car after i crashed it.

The insurance companies haven't broken any rules though as they state exactly that 'you get a courtesy car whilst your car is being repaired' which is what they promise and deliver. It's no different to when they guarantee to be £200 cheaper than other rival insurances which they most probably are but what they don't tell you is that the cost is offset by the excess payout which could be £300 or more. In the event of a claim it's much easier to raise £150 than £450 (excess fee) and this is where a lot of customers get caught out. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is so you need to read the terms and conditions carefully before agreeing to accept any agreement.

If my car had to be written off, I wouldn't expect the insurance company to provide a courtesy car, but would expect a prompt pay-out. It's then up to me to find another vehicle. I would have said that the OP's friend's issue is the lack of pay-out.

I have a deal with my insurance company that, should my car need repairs like bodywork which has to go off island, I can hire a car, because it can be well over a week before any courtesy car turns up. It's cheaper for them as I only hire if I need to but they will pay huge taxi fees if, say, I need to get dog to vet - hire cars don't allow dogs.

The car was written off on the 11th of november its noe the 10th January
no courtesy car and still no pay out
so how does he buy a new car.
so the seagull really does what the add shows

It is not possible for me to comment without knowing the exactly circumstances that led to the car being written off, and the details of the insurance policy.

For example, the following can complicate and delay insurance pay out: hit and run, un-insured driver, etc. etc...

Some insurance companies will offer policies to insure against hit and run and un-insured driver, nearly always as an optional extra.

As the others have already mentioned, the insurance policy may only provide hired car while one's own car is being repaired but not written off.

Always check what the policy covers in advance and don't buy on price alone. There may be several possible circumstances which delay a payout.

Think above posts say a lot. Of course, none of us know the specific circumstances. My claim for a written off vehicles was delayed for 8 weeks purely because of Christmas/New Year and the weather - lack of ferries; no phone or broadband!! Plus I did haggle over the pay-out, which gained me an extra couple of grand!

Reading what the policy covers is vital. In addition, it's always worth having a specific list of your requirements and speaking to a broker; you can often negotiate as I (and others I know) have done.

To all of you who find you get good deals from comparison websites, don't take the above amiss! I ditched any searching with those websites when I was given stupidly expensive quotes as, apparently, all PA postcodes were in the hotbed of crime in Paisley just outside Glasgow, not over 100 miles and a ferry crossing away!
