It might be easier for you to post the make and model of the TV and from the specification of that model we can see what you'd need.
According to the manual, if I'm looking at the right one, the TV does have that socket, and the TV comes with the cable you would need to connect laptop to TV (this would give pictures only). For audio you would need a separate cable, with a headphone jack at both ends.
Some interesting info in these posts, I am looking at upgrading my TV, from 36" CRT to 43" LED model, we currently have Freesat and Freeview via seperate Humax PVR's.
As we are on Fibre for the broadband, I am looking into getting a KODI PVR, is anyone on here using KODI, as I amazed that you can get all the Sky Sports and Movie stuff, and loads of other content for no subscription.
If this is the case why are folk still subscribing to Sky, or am I missing something.
That is part of what I am trying to find out Francais, but if we need Sky Go I suppose we will need to continue with our subsciption. Never heard of KODI, but I am not the telly addict.
Yep, Mrs Bonce, it is a bit of a learning curve for me also, but I am told folk have been using KODI for years with no issues.
Not recommended though for using direct into a recently purchased new smart TV, as it will leave a footprint, which could cause warranty issues Should the smart TV start to play up.
I am told it is best to use a seperate box for KODI, which is what I am planning to do.

Page 22 shows the different ways to connect a PC / laptop. The top connection is how you can connect your laptop using the VGA port (PC out) using the D-sub cable that would have been supplied. If you've lost it you can get them off e-bay cheap enough. Just check whether you need male connectors (pins) or female (holes).
As Trekkin Tekkie states, you'll also need an audio cable. This is like a headphone cable but with the plug at both ends - like this.
You can get different length leads to suit your requirements.

Kodi is a media centre app that runs on Windows, Linux (even on Raspberry Pi) & Android. It used to be called XBMC - XBox media centre.
It can be used to play files from local storage, which is what I use it for - I transferred all my DVD's and CD's to a big hard disk attached to my network. I run Kodi on an Amazon Firestick (it's Android). My LCD TV is wall mounted and I have no other cables running to it, all the DVD's and CD's are in the loft so I've got no clutter at all. I've also used another app called Plex for this which worked OK but not quite as slick.
Kodi itself is a great app and does nothing untoward but it also has the ability to run plug-ins or extensions giving it additional functionality. It is these extensions that facilitate the dodgy stuff, like being able to watch Sky channels, films or TV serials FOC. A bit like the old dodgy decoders and Sky cards - not strictly speaking illegal to use, but dodgy nonetheless. I would not be surprised if Sky et al are working on away to block the streams. Probably a constant battle like how Sky used to upgrade security and send out new cards every now and again.
Great summary TEFKAS. Like a computer, the kit itself is pukka. It's what you do with it that counts.
With the torrents etc there's an argument to say you're not stealing the content. The original continues to be in the possession of the creator/rights owner.
Depriving them of the proceeds of selling or renting out a copy of it is another matter though. If everyone was OK with that, there'd ultimately be no content.
I use Plex but can mirror our kit so have no need of anything more and 50% of our viewing is streaming now anyway, via Netflix and Now TV, with occasional rents from GP. All totally non-dubious :-)
